If President Bush attempts to press guest worker legislation that would legalize illegal aliens, the result will be a politically poisonous stalemate.
Under a Tancredo proposal, illegal aliens who don't return home to avail themselves of that guest worker plan would risk being removed from the country with no hope of ever reentering legally. That might not be the highlight of their Christmas lists, but that's not the main concern. Tancredo's guest worker proposal would be better than what we have now, and would be far more politically salable than any legalization plan.
