Storm System Brewing in Central Caribbean

MIAMI - A storm system brewing in the central Caribbean could develop into a tropical cyclone this week while dropping heavy rain and causing dangerous flooding and mud slides on Puerto Rico and the island of Hispaniola, forecasters said.
Clouds and thunderstorms stretched over a vast area from Costa Rica to Puerto Rico, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported.
Though the storm had no defined center, it became better organized Tuesday and could develop into a tropical or subtropical storm by Thursday, forecasters said.
"The primary threat right now is heavy rain that will continue whether the system develops or not," said Jack Beven, a hurricane specialist at the center.
Satellite estimates showed more than 10 inches of rain falling each hour.
The next tropical storm to form during the Atlantic hurricane season, which ends Nov. 30, would be named Otto.

LOL! Just returned from Europe Sunday night, and realized one window is still boarded. Several boards are still propped just below the windows.
This looks like a significant rain event for PR over several days, with some potential for stiff breezes there too. We had some nice showers last night. Good for the tomatoes and peppers in the garden...loving this cool weather!

Ha! It was just last Monday that I declared my property 100% recovered from Ivan. (downed trees cleared - minor repairs completed)
I've been kind of thinking all this cool weather meant we could stop worrying about tropical weather for awhile.
Been getting out my jackets and stuff, and actually wearing long pants by choice.
Congratulations! You are ahead of me. I still need to fix the soffit out back. Happy to report the new fence was completed two weeks ago. Solar pool heater panels were repaired after Frances, and held up fine for Jeanne.

Tropical cyclone? Wrong body of water. Tropical cyclones appear in he Western Pacific Ocean. It would become a hurricane because of where it started. The correct general term would be a circular storm.
Tell that to forecaster Bevin since that is his report, straight from the NHC. Methinks you'll lose that argument.
While I was tossing and turning trying to get back to sleep at 4 this morning, for some reason I remembered that 'cane season was over until the end of the month...........
The terms "hurricane" and "typhoon" are regionally specific names for a strong "tropical cyclone". A tropical cyclone is the generic term for a non-frontal synoptic scale low-pressure system over tropical or sub-tropical waters with organized convection (i.e. thunderstorm activity) and definite cyclonic surface wind circulation (Holland 1993).
