I can answer your question - from personal experience. Back in 2001, I had gotten up early on a Sunday morning about 0500 hrs. I heard a vehicle driving through the neighborhood slowly, and it made several trips around the block. I looked out the window and noticed it was an older van, with at least 2 occupants. I went back to making a pot of coffee, and heard it again. It had pulled into my driveway.
I grabbed my AK-47 (which was closest to me in the kitchen), and as the two occupants of the van got out of their vehicle on their way to my front door I exited through the back door. I went around the house, and as I turned the corner by the garage I was at the passenger's window of the van in a flash - with the AK shouldered and safety released. There was evidently a third person in the van, as he was now sitting in the passenger seat trying to keep his bladder under control. His buddies were armed, and knocking at my front door. I told the guy in the van to call his buddies attention to his situation, which he did. They dropped their weapons.
I didn't know any of them, but I had seen the van at an acquaintance's house some months prior. Rather than calling the law, I kept the weapons and made them all empty their pockets. I kept their driver's licenses, gave them back the $35 they had between them, and then let a three round burst go through the center of their radiator.
They left, never to be seen by me again. Had I turned them in, they'd have spent maybe the day in jail, and been back the next day or next week for sure. No doubt when I wasn't awake. This way, they kept their lives, lost their guns and driver's licenses, and I didn't have to look over my shoulder for so long or so hard.

Rather than calling the law, I kept the weapons Could be stolen. If you are found with them sometime in the future, guess who gets the blame.
