It may very well be these two guys didn't want to stay for a second term. It's not like they were fired. Why would Bush simply not accept the resignations of two guys who wanted to leave regardless of Bush's desire that they stay or not?

Ashcroft probably uttered the word that some kind of border security was needed, and he got axed.

For AG I like former California AG, Dan Lundgren. He has always impressed me. I think he just won a seat in the House which Arnold can backfill.

I have respected Ashcroft ever since he refrained from disputing his defeat in the senate election to Carnahan, who had been killed. There were also many chances to challenge voter irregularities. But unlike Gore, Aschroft did not want to create instability in an effort to further his own interests. This country needs more people of character such as Ashcroft.

I'm going to go way out on a limb and be the first one to mention U.S. Attorney
Patrick Fitzgerald, not the former Peter Fitzgerald senator but the prosecutor. By all accounts he is a rarity in that he's clean and honest.
The only downside is I don't think he has wrapped up the Plame Name Game investigation

Darn, I like John Ashcroft & HATE change. Hope no other positions get shaken up.
To: USNA74
Ashcroft won't join the Supremes. And Scalia will be Chief, not Thomas.
But Rudy would be an interesting choice for AG. Except he might be pretty aggressive against conservatives arguing for the pro-life cause before the Supreme Court or those who are trying to uphold DOMA.
I'll be interested to see who Bush picks.

Is is just a coincidence that Pensylvania Avenue was re-opened to pedestrian traffic on the day Ashcroft resigned?

"The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved," John Ashcroft wrote in a five-page, handwritten letter to President Bush."
Really? That's a bit much.

They've both done good work and Ashcroft has done it under a firestorm.

Even though some inm here may disagree I think Ashcroft was a fine AG! A definite improvement over the previous AG.

Very disappointed that Ashcroft has resigned. Heard it on the radio coming in to work tonight. Very sorry.
