The northern half of the Mississippi from Minneapolis to around Cape Girardeau is heavily industrialized (and unionized). The Misssissippi south of Missouri is heavily black.

That explains it. I was less certain about the northern Mississippi than the southern.

I don't understand why Matagorda County, TX is black on that map. SOS of Texas website shows with 100% reporting it went 64% for Bush

Yikes!

That Red/blue beast in the population adjusted image looks like a sea-creature whose mouth, anus, and other soft parts are blue while the cartilege and muscles are red. ;^)
