Over the summer, Michael Savage had a show about the French Revolution. He had read a book that presented the compelling argument that the revolution wasn’t a response to an overtly oppressive monarchy, but the stark opposite. This book, and I don’t remember the title, contended that the revolution was one birthed out a society with limitless boundaries and personal freedoms, which led to a degraded societal state where everything was socially acceptable. This position stands in contrast with the traditional teachings that imply that it was merely a response to irresponsible “muscle-flexing” of those in charge of pre-revolutionary France.
