Did you see the new 6.8mm caliber being tested by the military now? Much better ballistics than the 5.56mm, and still allows for hi cap mags. From the lit I can recall that is a shorter version of the .270 hunting round.

You are probably aware of it but, Lazzeroni puts out a very nice round also. I have a stock Warbird and I liked it so much I had a Custom Made. Very fast and Accurate. Some say the fastest 30 cal on the planet but I don't push it that hard. http://lazzeroni.com/ they can definitely reach out and touch something/body.
