NEAR FALLUJAH, Iraq - More than 4,000 U.S. Marines and Army troops punched their way into northeastern Fallujah on Monday, kicking off a massive assault dubbed Operation Phantom Fury that seeks to put an end to half a year of insurgent control of the Sunni Muslim city.

The prelude to the assault on the Askari neighborhood was a crushing air and artillery bombardment of the city that rose to a crescendo by Monday evening, with U.S. strike jets dropping bombs around the clock and big guns pounding the city every few minutes with high-explosive shells.

Meanwhile, insurgents in Baghdad and nearby Ramadi tried to keep up the pressure on the coalition forces with new attacks, including one on a Catholic church in the capital.

Earlier Monday U.S. troops had fought their way into the city's western outskirts, seizing two bridges over the Euphrates River and helping Iraqi soldiers take the city's main hospital in the first stage of a major assault on the insurgent stronghold.

You're probably right. My recollection -- probably wrong -- is that it's a tracer every 5th round. But again, I'm probably wrong.

"Whoa! Would like to be seeing that one - from a safe distance away!"

Awesome sight. Bet lot of the animals are trying to high tail it.

and KoRn's point is valid.

also, in light or obscure-vision ops where we have visual ascendency and the enemy is basically blind, the sound signature of the AK might confuse them (whereas the sharper bark of the 16 would help them)

many of the insurgent leaders went to ground.

What does "went to ground" mean?

It's tracers from the guns. In person, it looks like lasers which is impressive, but then when you realize that the tracer is only every 100th round, it is a freakin unbelievable rain of steel.

On the other side you have Allawi, who is backed up by the USA, Iraqis, and the coalition.

"They think Iraq now is now weak, but I warn them from this platform that hours of seriousness have begun," Allawi said of the insurgents. "I will never permit anyone to inflict harm on the Iraqi people, whether they are foreign terrorists or Saddam loyalists."

Those S*** talking "clerics" need to die too.

This battle will send a chilling message to terrorists in other Iraqi cities. That is, give up or die.

The AK-74 fires a .224 and will chamber a .223.
In the fight at Somalia, our little .223 killed over 500 enemy while their 7.60 only took down 18 of our guys.
The 7.62 is more of a through and through bullet where the .223 tears up the body.IMO

Specifically it means laying down under cover. It is usually used to mean a person has gone into deep hiding.
