The O'Reilly Factor for Kids: The Pinhead Factor
nytimes.com ^ | November 7, 2004 | Michael Newman

BILL O'REILLY, who became rich and successful by behaving like an adolescent on television, has now written an advice book for adolescents on how to become rich and successful.

As if that weren't enough to make any playground bully's head spin -- should he renounce his tactics or perfect them? -- ''The O'Reilly Factor for Kids'' raises a more difficult question: which Bill O'Reilly should the youth of America aspire to emulate, Bill O'Reilly the anchor or Bill O'Reilly the author?

Appearances to the contrary, they are not quite the same. Although both Bills like to make fun of ''pinheads,'' on TV those pinheads have included, so far this year, California legislators, Harvard Law School graduates, federal judges, protesters at the global trade meeting in Sea Island, Ga., Indiana University administrators, the cast of ''Saturday Night Live,'' members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, a columnist for The Globe and Mail in Toronto (but not -- repeat not -- all Canadians!), Anheuser-Busch and, on occasion, The New York Times (where I happen to be employed).

Ahem. These pinheads, to be clear, are grown-up pinheads. His book, a kind of pre-emptive strike on the gathering menace of potential pinheads, is aimed at 9- to 16-year-olds, who are warned against publicly insulting their parents, not doing their homework, getting sunburns and giving wedgies. If these kids aren't careful, they might grow up to be Al Franken. (Note to O'Reilly: Although often sunburned as a youth, I never gave anyone a wedgie. Explanations for my current status as a Times pinhead must lie elsewhere.)

Ben Stein wrote a pretty good book called "How to Ruin Your Life," which I gave to a friend's eldest daughter. Basically reverse psychology. One item I remember: "Treat those who treat you well badly; treat those who treat you badly well." That sort of thing.

IMHO the best "anti-pinhead" treatments are:

(a) Administration of Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead;

(b) Lavish and repeated administration of Heinlein novels;

(c) [Advanced] Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlitt;

(d) [Super-Duper Ultra Strength] Human Action by Ludwig von Mises.

Will someone out there help unmask this self-centered, hypocrite, bully-head O'Reilly?

So: who is the real Bill O'Reilly? Maybe O'Reilly the anchor can interview O'Reilly the author and find out. If he agrees to appear on his program, he may want to read his book for some advice on how to deal with himself.

There are two O'Reilly's. The O'Reilly on the radio show had sex, not politics, on his brainwave.
