PHILADELPHIA (AP) - A Libertarian who lost a race for Congress on Tuesday has been arrested for evading $87,000 in federal income taxes.
Arthur L. Farnsworth, 42, had vowed on his Web site that he would ``never file an individual federal income-tax return again.''
A federal grand jury alleged the electrical engineer failed to pay taxes for three years on more than $221,000 in income and tried to conceal his earnings by transferring assets to fraudulent trusts and overseas bank accounts.
Farnsworth, treasurer of the Pennsylvania Libertarian Party, drew fewer than 4,000 votes in his bid for a seat in the House of Representatives. Republican Michael Fitzpatrick won the race.
Farnsworth was jailed Friday to await a Monday bail hearing. If convicted of tax evasion, he could be jailed for at least a year and ordered to pay all back taxes.

Another reason no one takes the Libertarian Party seriously.

I pay my taxes because it is the law. I'm not real happy about it, but I do it.

Arthur L. Farnsworth, 42, had vowed on his Web site that he would ``never file an individual federal income-tax return again.'' The Japanese commonly use a phrase that applies here. "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down". And in that vein, here's hoping that any hammering Farnsworth encounters in Federal prison is strictly consensual.

The same thing happened to Crazy Cabbie from the Howard Stern Show. He shot his mouth off on the radio, and boom, the Feds were on it.

...tried to conceal his earnings by transferring assets to fraudulent trusts and overseas bank accounts. He'll try to say he did it out of principle, but in reality, he's just a crook, doing just what mobsters and dopesters do.

I remember Objectivist radio host Mark Scott once analogizing such strategy to trying to stop a freight train by throwing yourself in front of it - not always the most efficient approach to achieve your goal.

Striking a blow for what you believe in is a good thing, but better to get a large crowbar and be miles away from the wreck.

ALL the "acts of the legislature" that enforce the Income Tax Amendment are repugnant to our Constitution.

ALL the "acts of the legislature" that enforce the Income Tax Amendment are repugnant to our Constitution. Maybe so, but if you or anyone else wants to challenge it, you better go through official channels.

God, how I hate the LP. Drains votes from the Republicans, helps the Democrats...a totally counterproductive enterprise, much like those who vote for it.....

Libertarians are Republicans who have become Democrats but don't want to admit it.
