Chris Matthews: Press should cover Red America as a "Foreign Country".
Hardball | 11/5/04

Posted on 11/05/2004 5:21:26 PM PST by Timeout

Chris Matthews was discussing the "moral values" impact on the election with Jim Van der Hei (WaPo) and Jim ______ (Chicago Tribune). The two Jim's actually seemed to get it...they specifically said it was demeaning to attribute it merely to evangelism, gay marriage and abortion. They agreed that the press does NOT understand heartland America.

Chris had not really agreed with them, simply asked the questions. And then, at the very end of the segment, he said:

"Maybe we have to start covering 'America' as a separate beat...like our foreign correspondents".

Amazing! The entire media elite MISSED the most important issue in an election that had gone on for 2 full years. How? By living in the center of blue country where they rarely interact with church-going "folk". And Chris' solution is that they should start covering a vast swath of the country as if WE are foreigners. Funny, coming from the guy who went in the tank for the French looking candidate.

He was admitting that the New York-Washington media was not in touch with big parts of America; thus, the liberal media now has no choice but to cover fly-over country as if they were foreign correspondents.

Might it make more sense to have correspondents who actually LIVE in a Red State or two?!

Just the reference to "foreign correspondents" implies occasionally sending out someone who shares none of Red America's values to write "Deliverance"-type pieces for the enlightenment of NY Times Magazine readers.

I will watch it again to see if you're right. But I got the impression Chris was holding onto the typical left doctrine that Red Americans are racist, homophobe, uneducated rubes. He wasn't at all that way before this year.

I agree, "Old Media" is a much more accurate term than "Main Stream Media." LET'S START A TREND! From now on it is not the MSM it is the OM.

Further we are at the threshold of becoming the new MSM. The Internet is where America will come to be informed.

Perhaps we will have a 2nd Civil War in this Country.

I can almost see it.

But, I know which side will be better armed and which side will have the military on its side.

Matthews, just go back to sleep. . it's passed you by. .
you can read about it in the history books 20 yrs. from
now if you're still around.

It made me sick to hear this bunch of "journalists" now
having to give President Reagan his due, because HISTORICAL
truth had already jumped up and bit them in the but. If
you didn't hear them when Reagan was President; it was the
same vitriol as you've witnessed against President Bush -
every single day. President Reagan just rose above them.

They won't get it until every state on the election map turns red. Is there a map any where that shows the 2004 results by Congressional District. I would like to compare the winner take all version with a one elector for each congressional district plus 2 electors for winning the popular vote.

Actually far more offensive to me was when Matthews was when Matthews claimed 40% of Americans believed Genesis literally (I have no idea if that's true). Then he went on to say that "Maybe we should start comparing Baptists to Islamofascists!" Or words to that effect.

The man actually muttered Baptists and Islamists in the same breath.

I'm a Catholic and I don't take Genesis literally, but even I know that comparison was just hateful. When's the last time Matthews was frightened a Baptist would blow up his plane? When was the last time Matthews heard of a Baptist sniping at innocent residents in the DC area? The man is so far removed from reality, I don't even know how he finds his way home.

Works for me. But--we don't have to grant the press a visa. ;)

I agree with you- sorta, kinda:) It was as though Chris (much to the amazement of the others on the show) suddenly had an "Aha" moment...there really IS an entire America I was unaware of...

I thought he seemed a little stunned by this discovery.

Here's the deal- Chris was in the Northeast...and San Fransisco. Any questions?

Evan Thomas, the Newsweek reporter, made the same admission on Laura Ingraham's show today. he admitted that HE as well as the MSM are out of touch. i think maybe he and Chrissy get it now.

These guys just do not understand that one does not need to be "religious" NOT to want the government to sanction and approve the idea of gay marriage

The guy doesn't have any concept of religion. He compared Bible believing Baptists to fundamental MUSLIMS! Matthews is truly lower than dirt.

"What a lot of people don't get is that there is so much more to it than religion. I'm not a particularly religious person, but I see my values reflected in the republican party and scorned by democrats."

I agree, me too.

Not trying to defend Chris in any way but, what he said was that the press probably needed to get out beyond the major urban areas and cover more rural areas of the country like having foreign correspondents

When an opponent offers that kind of admission, then take it and quit yer bitching for a moment.

I agree. He observed the situation and made an honest comment.

I lived in California for 17 years...12 of them in the Bay area. I know exactly what you mean.

I had many good friends---men, women, married, single. One day, after I'd been there for 10 years, I realized I had never met any of their parents or siblings. This was totally foreign to my upbringing in the south [where I've returned]. Here I know everyone's parents, grandparents, children. Heck, I know all the godparents.

Just a small anecdote of how different it is out there.

The MSM is very wounded.

It is time for the fiscal management side to make changes.

Like publishers cleaning house on stupid editors.

Even the devil Redstone (who claims he voted for Bush for economic reasons) can't stand all this $$$ blood forever.

Ditto, the Cox family, the Newhouses, Knight-Ridder, Gannett, GE, Disney, Hearsts etc....

King Rupert has vanquished them all.

Gee, I wonder which way I'm going to vote.

I wonder if the Dims realize they just alienated at least another 15 - 20% of their base!

Some Democrats have already voted for Bush.

As the media rants and fumes about the religious right, they forget about the old school Democrats in the south. Southerners are steadfast in their moral convictions, so the 'party faithful' may be faithful no more.

I think a lot of lefties are rethinking the whole situation now. They really thought they could put a NE liberal and a trial lawyer in the Whitehouse and they were severely wrong.

I'm going to use it. It's fun to think of Rather, Jennings, Brokow, and Curic and Company as part of the Old Media, especially since they are under the delusion that they're so "cutting edge."

Old Media, or OM, it is then/LOL.
