Like it or not, we are all entrepreneurs now.
Institute a protectionist policy, and let's see if your company keeps a location here in the United States.
Would you advise any young adult to get into the IT field. I wouldn't. "
IT WOULD BE MY NUMBER 1 RECOMMENDATION: GET AN ENGINEERING DEGREE.
Do you really think a Liberal arts degree is worth squat?
No, it's not.
There are plenty of opportunities in IT, computers, engineering, semiconductors, EDA, software, etc. ...
if you are really scared of foreign competition, become a civil engineer - they will never be able to outsource road-building and constuction jobs :-)
Everything I've read and heard says China is the fastest growing economy in the world...And every capitalist in the world has gone, is moving or is trying to figure out how to get to China...I don't think I believe China has 50,000 less manufacturing jobs than they did a year ago...
Not just that: "...Not a penny stays in the US..."
Iscool, are you a volunteer at this company then?
I mean, if not a penny stays in the U.S. how are you paid?
How about the money they pay you?
Doesn't matter if they leave or not...The demand for the products will still be here...In which case an American company will pick up the slack and the profits will likely be re-invested in America thus creating even more American jobs...
Im just saying that if you're obsolete, you cant complain about being outsourced by someone that is dealing with current technology. You have to expect it.
1/3 of electricians in New England earn $100,000 per year. It's tough to outsource an electrician.
Re read the post...The 'company 'profits' leave the country...
As an independent software guy it is my responsibility to make sure i know more and work harder than the other guy, whether he is down the street or across the sea.
I don't get money...I get peanuts...
The Indians I work with dont make 1/10th what I make. They probably make 75% and up to what I make. As for getting into the IT field. It's very competitive, but so was the Corps when I got out. They were throwing people out left and right. Im not afraid of the competition because outsourcing aint all it's cracked up to be. You're not worried about your job and your mainstay is C!? Dont you think you should start getting into C++ or C#.
If a kid is willing to take advice from a parent, I would say get a good general education, and forget specialization. That means math up through calculas. Then I would advise reading "Rich Dad Poor Dad" in the library. As has been mentioned in this thread, the self employeed don't get outsourced, and often make more money than those who work for others. Investment is also a key. Start saving sooner and invest long term.
I loooooooooooooooooooooooooove C#! :)
yeah,there's too many of 'em.
How are they supposed to earn a living?
Somehow we all manage to muddle through.
To listen to the socialists, millions of Americans are wallowing in filthy slums dying of third world diseases and running wild and emaciated through the streets with leprosy sores oozing in the wind.
This is absolute idiocy.
I know a couple of BILLION people that would trade places with a laid off American manufacturing worker.
The declining value of the dollar will help. It will make American product more affordable then imports, and create more US based jobs.

Bravo. There are a lot of good jobsout there. You need the education and skills to get them. I am a 26 year employee of a telecommunications company. I can retire with full pension in 4 years. If I am lucky to make it that long, I will be 3/4 of the my way to a college degree. I can see the writing on the wall, and I'm not sitting around waiting for the pink slip, I'm getting the knowledge to start a new career.
Can't wait until they invent x-ray vison so civil engineers will finally be able to produce a set of documents detailing work in an urban environment that aren't pretty much worthless.
