A Marijuana Breakthrough?
The Scotsman ^ | Nov. 5, 2004 | David Kohn

Posted on 11/05/2004 1:38:10 PM PST by Ahriman

A decade ago, when Daniele Piomelli went to scientific conferences, he was often the only researcher studying cannabinoids, the class of chemicals that give marijuana users a high. His work often drew sniggers and jokes; but not any more. At the recent annual Society for Neuroscience conference in San Diego last week, scientists delivered almost 200 papers on the subject.

Why all the attention? Many scientists believe marijuana-like drugs might be able to treat a wide range of diseases, far beyond the nausea and chronic pain typically treated with medical marijuana.

Researchers presented tantalising evidence that cannabinoid drugs can help treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis - known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease - Parkinson’s disease and obesity. Other researchers are studying whether the compounds can help victims of stroke and multiple sclerosis.

Although the chemicals work on the same area of the nervous system, the new drugs are much more refined and targeted than marijuana, with few of its side effects.

"Cannabinoids have a lot of pharmaceutical potential," says Piomelli, a neuroscientist at the University of California. "A lot of people are very excited."

If there is a "whopping new tax" on it, the DEA will just move under the ATF. Do you feel safer now?

"So should we also legalize heroin because there are opiod analgesics?"

I think you mistunderstand the premise of this article. Heroine is illegal, as it should be. But there are many legitimate, legal, useful opiates. Marijuana is illegal, as are all cannaboids. But there may be many legitimate uses for marijuana derivatives that could benefit society. Studies need to be done, and people need to start thinking about it instead of reacting from their gut. Plus, when was the last time someone died from a marijuana overdose, or went on a pot-crazed crime spree?

I am one of the few social conservatives that does want legalization. And I am no libertarian, either.

On this one issue, that leaves me homeless..LOL. I don't fit in with anyone:
I hate the fact that bottom-feeding commies are the ones that mostly support it. But I guess that is why I never vote according to my stand on this one issue...it would be morally impossible to support commie leftists and their baby-killing fascist anti-American agenda just because I am anti-prohibition.

Gov't research in the 70's showed that THC can shrink some cancers. They didn't like that very much, so they buried it.

BTW Marinol is a particular brand of legal synthetic THC. Not a generic term for legal pot.

I know. That was the point I was making in my first post.

There are plenty of social and other conservatives (other then libertarians) on here that think marijuana prohibition is a waste of time, money, and resources. Your hardly alone. There are always raging debates on it here on FR.
