Dems & Sebelius Lose Ground in Legislature
Kansas Political News ^ | November 3, 2004 | The Editor

Mid-term elections bode ill for Sebelius

The '04 Elections could be a bad omen for Governor Sebelius and the Democratic Party.

Sebelius lost three seats in the legislature. Wins by Kasha Kelly (R-Ark City), Pat George (R-Dodge City), Mitch Holms (R-Larned) and Virgil Peck (R-Coffeyville) flipped 4 seats from Democrat to Republican in the Kansas House. Only 1 Dem beat a House Republican incumbent.

In the Senate, Republicans and Democrats traded seats keeping the balance of power virtually unchanged.

The House is now dominated by Conservative Republicans and the Senate is not nearly as liberal as it was.

You can see indvidual returns at the Secretary of State's website.

I know this is of limited interest to most freepers, but as a Kansan this is good news to me. Since getting into office, Sebelius has been heavily fundraising and campaigning for Kansas Democrats. Hopefully we can find someone two years from now who can beat her.

Great to hear the news Axel.

How about getting a decent concealed carry bill up to the Governess to veto, then have the legislature override her veto?

I live thousands of miles away but I have been against Sebelius from day 1 because of her anti death penalty stance. She thinks it is OK to kill the unborn though.

I have been nervous from the day she was elected that she will try to commute the death sentences of those 2 animals who were convicted in the "Wichita horror" killings of Dec. 2000. I am glad the GOP made gains in the legislature this year. I would love to see the governor dumped in '06.

This is really good news for those of us in the trenches. Now all we need is for David Jackson, a conservative senator who came up 39 votes short in the election to win his recount. I understand that one vote from Wabaunsee county has already turned up. Keep your fingers crossed. The provisional ballots have not been counted yet!

We don't quite have a veto-proof majority--yet. I've heard the Dems are scared to cross Sebelius. But I'd like to try the concealed carry again!

Sebelius will work out a coalition between the Democrats and the moderate Republicans and get as much of her agenda as possible through. That's the price we pay for having three polticial parties in this state.

axel f....thanks, we'll take all of the good news we can! Hopefully, too, more republicans in Kansas will become active. I think there is a complacency in many because they think our state is safely republican. We need to keep up the good work and then continue to build to unseat Sebelius. Don't know how much help Douglas county will be, but every vote counts in the state elections!

I think the only way to get concealed carry past her is to do it during an election year. Get the NRA to spend a little high profile money and scare the Demos and Rhinos.

Or we could just vote her out....

Hopefully former Governor Graves is retired for good. I'd hate to see him run for senate if/when Pat Roberts retires. You folks need to find another former marine to replace Roberts...or at least a veteran.
