The Advocate is claiming that Bill Clinton advised Kerry to support state bans on gay marriage to make himself more appealing to the heartland.
But Kerry responded, "I could never do that."

At least Kerry finally stood up for something.
But I think Clinton underestimated what would have happened if Kerry flip flopped on another big issue. He would have alienated his base and not gained a single heartland vote.
Reminds me of what I hate about Bill Clinton- he would say or do anything to get elected.
I think Newsweek is reporting this in their special campaign issue.
We should be very glad Kerry didn't listen. But, I don't believe the story in the first place.
You don't believe that Clinton would advise Kerry to do it?
Or you don't believe that Kerry would respond that way?
Half of his base would have felt alienated. The other half of Kerry's base hated both Kerry and Bush, but Kerry was the guy to advance that sides agenda.
I don't believe this story. I can't imagine Clinton dishing out such advice and believing Kerry would have gained votes in the heartland, after what happend in Massachusetts and San Francisco, with such a position.
I'm not sure Clinton would give him that advice...........I didn't think Clinton wanted to get him elected. I could be all wrong, but ...........
Bill Clinton knows that it was "Gays in the Military" and then "Don't ask, don't tell" that scuttled his early presidency.
Also ...... the whole story smells to me........ I really don't believe a sentence in Newsweek EVER!
Moral values, while important was not on the radar screen for issues and I don`t think it was a factor overall in the election.
Where was this issue raised? In the same exit polls that proved to be wrong on vote count. Is it possible that this was a liberal set up to show win or lose those that supported President Bush are intolerant religious nuts, not knowledgeable about issues.Perhaps these polls were deliberatly skewed about more than vote count numbers.
SURE clinton offerred this advice. mr. gays-in-the-military said to oppose gay marriage???
right.
I was watching a panel on C-Span about gay issues in the campaign and Winnie Stalchenberg (sp?) of the Human Rights Campaign was asked about this example of "Kerry treachery." She responded that the HRC was very hurt and disappointed by this action of Kerry's and he had been taken to task by a contributor at a L.A. fundraiser.
I think he was told that if he supported these anti-gay marriage initiatives in any other state, the gay money would dry up as would their support.
So he was for gay marriage before he was against it before he was for it.
This entire issue is filled with subtle propaganda and outright bullfeathers.
What kills me is that Kerry flipped his wig when the story that he called Clinton leaked.
I thought that was very telling of Kerry, because I remember how Dubya dealt with the (accusatory-toned) question about his having called his father for advice on Iraq before we went in, and his answer to the reporter had very much of a "sure I did, he's my father, he was once president, and he directed a war, so yeah I did. What of it?"
I was a beautiful thing to watch. He shut her up but quick boy.
A jock-sniffing liberal elitist out of touch with Middle American values. No wonder John F*ckin' wouldn't follow Clinton's advice, even though it would have been the smart thing to do. Its also an area in which the Bushies failed to realize the powerful salience of "values" issues. Kerry was just too dumb or rather, too oblivious to take advantage of it.

Jeez,spin some Journey tunes already!
Nah. Those two go for the real hardcore sweatin'n'groanin' stuff, whenever TerAYza's back is turned:

Did Clinton leak this and was it leaked before or after the result ? Frankly, if this came from Clinton its like having your source as CBS or NYT.
