CLAMART, France (AP) - Doctors fought to keep Yasser Arafat alive as anxious Palestinian officials looked for ways to prevent unrest if their 75-year-old leader, said to be in a coma Friday, dies.
A swirl of reports saying Arafat had died Thursday were quashed by doctors at the French military hospital where he has been treated since being airlifted to France last week. Arafat's aides, however, acknowledged his condition was very serious. On Friday, Israeli Justice Minister Yosef Lapid told Israel TV's Channel Two that Arafat was brain dead and on life support. But a Palestinian spokeswoman denied Lapid's assertion.
"He is in a coma. We don't know the type but it's a reversible coma," Leila Shahid, the Palestinian envoy to France, told French RTL radio.
Shahid said Arafat was put under anesthesia to have medical tests, including an endoscopy and a biopsy of the spinal cord.
"The doctors don't have a diagnosis," she said. "All vital organs are functioning. This is why all the doctors say that he could or could not wake up."

No kidding. The wily Arafat apparently took every care to ensure that his "beloved" people would be in a fine mess when he died: no clear successor (guaranteeing a bloody power struggle -- with luck of the gingham dog and the calico cat variety) and -- I gather from a post yesterday -- that all that money that's been pouring into the PLO is accessible only to Arafat.
They are wetting themselves trying to figure out how they are going handle the announcement -- and the immediate aftermath -- of his death.
He may be dead now, but they won't admit it if he was...until they think they can do what they think they need to do. There also the question of the hundreds of millions of dollars -- (near a billion has been reported, at times) and it's control that would decide who takes over....terrorists or "moderates"
For how long could they keep Arafat's death "a secret"....????
Sometimes patients are put into a drug induced coma while they heal, or as they say, to perform tests. In other words he is so weak, they needed to do this to perform these tests.

They've been practicing their announcement. How many times did he die yesterday? I think it was six. He needs to die a few more times.
This is ridiculous, however, and the secrecy and misinformation surrounding his illness and living-undead state is positively perverse.
At this juncture, I'm inclined to believe he's "brain dead" but his body is on life support until a transition (financial and political) can be made. This fits well with the vast majority of the reports: he's both dead and not dead.
My ignorance on his customs likely runs deep but I understand an autopsy would be out of the question and, as is true for an Orthodox Jew, by example, he'd need to be buried within 24 hrs.
They have been rummaging through his offices and residence trying to find those Swiss Bank Account codes.

They put him the coma, but they don't know what type of coma it is? I think he died again, and they're just not telling us, because every time they do, we celebrate and Palestinians mourn.

That would be a shame. I'd like to see him die every day from now on. I guess eventually we'd have to let him go to hell, but couldn't we drag it out for awhile.
The Pallies are probably trying to find his hidden bank accounts and drain them before they announce his death -- because after word gets out that he's roasting in Hell, the accounts slam shut, don't they?
The news of his death was greatly exaggerated.
It is obvious that Arafat has some severe illness that has already been properly diagnosed. We will not be permitted to know all the facts until billions of dollars directly controlled by Arafat (in stolen US money... Thank you Clinton and Carter) have been moved into other Swiss accounts.
Suha is currently negotiating with the second line thug/thieves who run the criminal enterprise known as the "Palestinean Authority."
I pary for his soul and the souls of everyone, myself included. Maybe he still has a chance to be saved.
