Only the 1864 re-election of Abraham Lincoln, the 1944 re-election of Franklin Roosevelt and the 1980 election of Ronald Reagan rival this victory as milestones in the preservation of our security by the advancement of freedom.

The war was practically over by the 1944 election. What the hell is he talking about?

It's time to remember now that he's still a Democrat with a heavily statist bent. One can appreciate his stand in favor of Bush, but that doesn't mean his words should be taken as any kind of gospel.

I'd hardly call the war "almost over" in November, 1944. The
Battle of the Bulge hadn't even taken place yet.

WWII wasn't over until 1945, and it wasn't just confined to Old Europe. We were fighting the Japanese AND the Germans.
