It's a long story. One piece of the puzzle is that a lot of older Jews still imagine that the Republican party is full of anti-Semitism of the kind that existed circa 1930 when places like Harvard had quotas for Jews.
This is totally insane, of course. Of the two parties, there is IMHO a lot more anti-Semitism and anti-Israel sentiment among the Democrats.

I agree. I don't always get it myself. There are many underlying reasons why Jews are liberals. Often they are more loyal to their liberalism then their judaism. Unfortunately I think it is a result of 2000 years of religious persecution.
