BACKSTORY Posted on FR
In an effort to galvanize the message Kerry wants to deliver in the time remaining, he convened a powerful roster of journalists and columnists in the New York City apartment of Al Franken.....
The gathering could not properly be called a meeting or a luncheon.
It was a trial.
The journalists served as prosecuting attorneys, jury and judge. The crowd I joined in Frankens living room was comprised of: Al Franken and his wife Franni; Rick Hertzberg, senior editor for the New Yorker; David Remnick, editor for the New Yorker; Jim Kelly, managing editor for Time Magazine; Howard Fineman, chief political correspondent for Newsweek; Jeff Greenfield, senior correspondent and analyst for CNN; Frank Rich, columnist for the New York Times; Eric Alterman, author and columnist for MSNBC and the Nation; Art Spiegelman, Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist/author of Maus; Richard Cohen, columnist for the Washington Post; Fred Kaplan, columnist for Slate; Jacob Weisberg, editor of Slate and author; Jonathan Alter, senior editor and columnist for Newsweek; Philip Gourevitch, columnist for the New Yorker; Calvin Trillin, freelance writer and author; Edward Jay Epstein, investigative reporter and author; Arthur Schlesinger, Jr., who needs no introduction.
We sat in a circle around Kerry and grilled him for two long hours.
In an age of retail politicians who avoid substance the way vampires avoid sunlight, in an age when the sitting President flounders like a gaffed fish whenever he must speak to reporters without a script, Kerrys decision to open himself to the slings and arrows of this group was bold and impressive.
He was fresh from two remarkable speeches one lambasting the Patriot Act, another outlining his foreign policy ideals while eviscerating the Bush record and had his game face on.
He needed it, because Eric Alterman lit into him immediately on the all-important issue of his vote for the Iraq War Resolution. The prosecution had begun.
Wow, I see two verdicts of guilty in this. The media for being totally in bed with Kerry. And Kerry for subjecting himself to "trial" by such a flock of left wing loons.
The media slimes thought they could get away with fixing the election for Kerry. But 59,054,087 voters for Bush proved then wrong.
Therein lies the democrat party's problem.
Kerry should have been looking for votes where the voters are in the red states, not some star chamber in Manhattan.

A little place in the low rent district.
Oh well. Here's an assignment for you Liz!
Be sure to write to Bill Frist and tell him to just say no to Arlen Specter running Judiciary.

Wow, look at that roster. No Christians need apply.
bump for later...

And what became of Al and Franni's children ? They eat their young ?
The only thing that these supercilious baboons really care about is 'performance art'
The absolute most superficial thing about a leader.... 'acting abilities'...is their main concern that and of course...A deep commitment to the deconstruction of the America of our founders.... and the uplifting and implementation of 'his satanic majesty's requests'...
Is Al packing to head for Canada? Here's hoping!
H was for HOUSE (of Representatives). Senator McCarthy had nothing to do with the HCUA.
His son goes to Princeton
Wow--look at all the names working so hard to promote an anti-Israel presidential candidate.
Kerry's choice of invitees does not help the preception of Jewish control of the media. It certainly is interesting to note that of 16 people present to assist Kerry in his quest to bamboozle the American public, 15 were Jewish.
What a repellant crowd. Was Michael Moore out of town? I can't help but feel their pain today; how could the self annointed intelligensia have done everything for this flounder-faced loser except put lipstick on him and shove him out at Letterman singing show tunes, and STILL watch Chita walk off with their election? It comforts me no end to read Maureen Dowd's rantings, Begala's ravings, etc. But the very best part today was the termerity, the hubris, the astonishing cluelessness of the New York Times editorial page, who actually took Bush to task like an errant school boy and told him what he has to do to make up and play nice with the liberals. As if. If Frank Rich doesn't self-immolate before Sunday his weekly hissy-fest in the Times Arts section should make for a lovely morning. Even Canada doesn't want this crew. In the meantime, I listen to NPR, who seem to have mined the depths of the lugubrious Tom Waits cannon for suitably depressing bump music, as they try to figure out what went wrong...When's Teresa Heinz gonna give HER speech? Will we finally get to hear her unrestrained? Got the feeling she'll sound exactly like Cruella DeVille ("Idiots! Morons! Shove it"!)
