Sodrel defeats incumbent Hill in rematch Indiana 9th

Congressional District Wednesday, November 3, 2004 Posted: 3:31 PM EST (2031 GMT)

(CNN) -- Democratic Rep. Baron Hill was narrowly defeated in his bid for a fourth term in Indiana's 9th district by Republican challenger Mike Sodrel, who Hill had defeated two years earlier in a close race. Sodrel was ahead by less than 1,500 votes when CNN projected he would win the race with 99 percent of precincts reporting.

This time, Sodrel, who lost by some 10,000 votes in his maiden run for office in 2002, was a little smarter, a little more savvy and a lot better supported by his party. He took advantage of President George W. Bush's popularity in the district and attacked Hill's record.

During the campaign, Sodrel hammered Hill's voting record, declaring him overly liberal. In ads on TV and in stump speeches, Sodrel and his Republican party backers slammed Hill for being out of step with the culturally conservative district on the issues of abortion and a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage, which Hill voted against.

"It's not enough to say the right things," said Sodrel, a millionaire trucking company owner, in the candidates' last debate. "You've got to do them." ..... As it entered the final weeks, the campaign remained hotly contested, with Hill trying to prevent Sodrel from being the first Republican to go to Congress from the 9th District since 1962.

This was a race well off many of our radars because of umpteen heartbreakingly narrow losses since 1994, but a nice little win to make up for our defeats and to pad our majority.

Good question, I'm not sure. It'll be close to the 199-203 range, though.

CNN has it 231-200-1, with 3 undecided. One of those (NY-27) will be a gain for the Rats most likely, with 99% reporting, and the other two are in Louisiana. We have a good shot at taking the Louisiana ones with Boustany (R) facing Mount and Billy Tauzin III (R) facing Charlie Melancon.

I believe there are 435 House members or thereabouts.

That means a coalition of 290 members is a 2/3 majority.

With the Southern Conservative Democrats and the new makeup, getting some good legislation will only be a problem because of RINO's in the Senate -- Arlen Specter and company.

We need to start aiming our efforts (letters, emails, faxes, that is) at the Senate RINOS to get this country back on track.

Offically it's still 231/200/1 but I believe there are a few still counting and a few will recount.

I believe that the correct term for Southern Conservative Democrat is: Republican.

"Isn't that Lee Hamilton's old district?"

Adjusted a bit because of the loss of IN's 10th House seat in '02, but yes, that is his old bailiwick.

Lee personally selected Baron as his replacement....It took a while for the sheeple to realize that Hill is no Hamilton...

I have a rather funny story about one of Hill X neighbors, he wasn't well like in the hood, but got elected because of the River folks.....They redistrict the area a few years back...Sodrel worked VERY hard along the Ohio (He's from there...a very successful businessman who spent his own money) and HE WON!

Melancon in LA is a former aide to the popular former Sen. J. Bennett Johnston, Jr. But I still think young Tauzin may be able to defeat this Johnston understudy on Dec. 4.
