Let Obama's shining light lead the way for us all
Chicago Sun Times ^ | November 3, 2004 | Mary Mitchell

I have been gently reminded that a politician will break your heart. And Lord knows, I've had my heart broken more times than I care to remember. So, many of us are hoping. No, we are praying that Sen. Barack Obama will prove to be a new breed of politician.

We've had our fill of charlatans. They steal your heart with their charisma only to betray you with their chicanery.

As only the third African American to go to the U.S. Senate since Reconstruction, we know Obama will go to Washington carrying a heavy burden. He will not just be the Illinois senator representing a diverse population, he will be the only man in the Senate that African Americans can look to as one of their own.

Born to a woman from Kansas and a man from Kenya, Obama never ran from his black ancestry. We loved him for that.

He and his wife, Michelle, and their two children, represent an image seen too seldom in the national spotlight -- an intact, loving, black family.

As one of my single sisters put it, it wasn't Obama's electrifying speech at the Democratic National Convention that moved her.

It was the image of the coffee complexioned, smartly dressed Michelle Obama on the platform, at his side waving at the crowd.

Brown sugar sister

Black women needed that moment. That this Harvard-educated biracial man, who was raised in a white family, chose a brown sugar sister to marry gave black women all over this country a boost.

The Obamas are now the African-American First Family.

Did his pastor thank him for voting for partial birth abortion?

I'm glad Alan Keyes got his ass kicked.

Obama was able to put morality into context.

*** Isn't that also known as relativism????

Being a member of a liberal Protestant denomination doesn't make one an "Islamic mole".

Keyes has more principles in his pinky finger than you'll ever have.

You know, one good thing about the damned fiasco being over is that we in Illinois will no longer have to put up with people from OUTSIDE OF ILLINOIS offering unsolicited comments on OUR SENATE RACE. May you have your own version of Obama in Wisconsin someday.

So tell us what have you done in life to come to any equivalent to what Alan Keyes has done? Hateful commentary is so unappealing.

On what do you base this?

Seriously, you people need to get a grip. There is plenty to take him on about based on his positions. You don't need to spin these conspiracy theories about him being a closet Muslim. This is the kind of stuff the DUmmies do.

Republicans gained a net FOUR Senate seats. I'm not going to lose any sleep about losing an open seat we were never going to win anyway.

Some principles. Keyes allowed himself to get used by the far-left IL GOP and his campaign rhetoric would make even the Taliban blush. He was simply no match for Obama. Now he'll have to find a real job because he's finished in politics and he'll never get another appointment in a second Bush term because he's been harshly critical of it. The guy's a loser, plain and simple, nothing but a bizarro Al Sharpton.

I run my own business.

What tangible accomplishments do you credit to Keyes?

You can defend him all you want and I could understand it if he was pro death in a liberal "church", although I would still question his walk. But I cannot in no way begin to defend a person who has stood on the floor of a senate and defended the practice of PBA. Pulling a baby out of the womb untill the poor things hands and legs are wiggling and the baby is gasping for its first breath of God given Oxygen while a "doctor" inserts a tool that chrushes Gods childs brain while the baby screams in pain.

Yeah thats the ticket. Thats a unGodly man or woman and I will never forgive them untill they realize their mistake and turn from their ways and beg us and God for forgiveness.

Being a member of a liberal denomination does not excuse one for PBA.

Evan Bahye would be their man.

Evan Bayh is a the man the Dems could hang their hats on. He's a Democrat the country could vote for.

I'm not up on black terms...is a 'brown sugar sister' a bi-racial 'sister'? Not meant as a put-down or anything else...just wondering.

Because your party's a fricking joke. You mean the IL GOP can't find any real conservative Republicans living in big-ass Illinois to run against Obama so you signed up a washed-up free agent in Keyes? C'mon.

May you have your own version of Obama in Wisconsin someday.

We already do. His name is Feingold, and he wins because he has that positive, good-natured outlook that helped President Bush. You are not going to beat DemoRats like Obama with fire and brimstone speeches that Keyes spewed throughout his losing campaign, especially in a socialist state like IL.

I don't defend him a whit for his liberal positions. I simply object to those who wish to paint him as an "Islamic mole". He isn't, and asserting he is makes one look kooky.

But I cannot in no way begin to defend a person who has stood on the floor of a senate and defended the practice of PBA.

Great! We agree in our objection to his political positions.

Ryan should never have dropped out, regardless of what was coming out about him and his ex-wife. Alan Keyes is a fine speaker, but he'll never be elected to a national office, I don't think. His wife is Indian or Pakistani, isn't she? (probably a lovely woman, too!)

I live in Chicago and there has been ZERO discussion of Obama's views and record. And I mean ZERO.

That's because to these people that's mainly irrelevant. Read the article. It's all about racial identity and dividing the electorate and country on the basis of race. That and unabashed hero worship. They think this guy is Christ Himself and the Second Coming.

It's sad though, in a way. Illinois is becoming more and more maginalized on the far left fringe. I remember the time when Illinois could be counted on to deliver votes to Republican candidates. They came through for Nixon in '68 and '72, likewise Reagan in '80 and '84, Bush 41 in '88. Too bad that the wacko left seems to have run rampant there since then.

My fear is that it's infection is spreading to the surrounding states. We can't let that happen. Missouri, Indiana, and Ohio remain the linchpin of Republican strength in the Great Lakes region. We can't afford to have them go the way of Illinois.

That is all that blacks care about, the color of skin. They dont care about values, or crime, or war on terror, nope not even black babies being killed at 9mos. What is it with 90% of the black population? All they seem to care about is themselves and their race? Am I wrong???? Help me understand.
