WASHINGTON (AP)--Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards counseled John Kerry in a meeting Wednesday against conceding defeat yet, a senior Democrat said, as President George W. Bush held fast to a six-figure lead in make-or-break Ohio.
Kerry's campaign planned a statement by midday, his advisers said. Two of them, speaking on condition of anonymity, said concession seemed simply a matter of time after one last look for uncounted ballots that might close the 136,000-vote advantage Bush held in Ohio.
One senior Democrat familiar with the discussions said Edwards, a trial lawyer, wanted to make sure all options were explored and that Democrats pursued them as thoroughly as Republicans would if the positions were reversed.
Hours after White House chief of staff Andy Card declared Bush the winner, aides to the president said they were giving Kerry time to consider his next step.
He did, in a series of private meetings in Boston, where talk of concession was in the air.

I hear Kerry is on the phone with Bush at present.

Once an ambulance chaser, always an ambulance chaser.
Does this mean sKerry is in an ambulance somewhere?
Down with trial lawyers! Tort reform now! Prosecute Communist law guilds!
Edwards doesn't want to go home to "Heavy E" the fat lady who is now singin' the blues.
Yo, Edwards! I got your drink right here, buddy! |
Integrity, Integrity, Integrity!
He knows that this race showed him to be an empty suit; he HAD to grab the ring this time.
He will start campaigning for 2008 tomorrow morning.
Edwards doesn't have a job anymore. :)
Poor littly Jonnie E. has nowhere to go. Problem is no Dr. in their right mind would perform gastric bypass on the hefer for fear of malpractice suits.
Edwards is just trying to run up his billable hours before he's cut loose.
Little John has nothing to do now ---- he's a lame duck...
If Kerry concedes they don't have to count all the provisionals and others etc...
There is no illusion on Edwards' part that counting them all would result in a different outcome. But not conceding is the only way to have them all counted and more importanlty, keep the army of lawyers on billable hours for the next few weeks.
The lawyers need their gravy train gig.
That's cuz Edwards is on a short-bus to the unemployment line and political irrelevancy.
Flip-flopping like a dying fish out of water.
Edwards is looking at unemployment, whereas Kerry will still have a job.
