this is rather curious ...

Groundskeeper finds shell of grenade in right field

CHICAGO (AP) — A groundskeeper found a rusted, hollowed-out shell of a grenade in the right-field turf of Chicago’s Wrigley Field.

The grenade was found Tuesday morning by a worker at the home of the Chicago Cubs. Police bomb and arson investigators were called to examine the device, which they found to be empty and harmless.

“It’s a dud, just like the Cubs were,” Police spokesman Pat Camden said Wednesday.

Investigators said there was no way to determine how the device ended up on the field.

Pakistani man charged with reporting fake terror plot to attack New York City bridge

NEW YORK (AP) — A Pakistani man was charged Wednesday with lying to the FBI about a bogus terrorist plot to destroy the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.

Tanveer Choudhry, 32, who had a pending application for asylum in the United States, allegedly concocted the story to win favor from authorities. He was charged with making false statements and awaited arraignment in federal court.

Court papers allege Choudhry contacted the FBI on Oct. 1 to report a customer at the gas station where he worked tried to enlist him in an attack on the bridge, which connects Brooklyn and Staten Island. He claimed the customer and unidentified “brothers” wanted to hijack two gasoline trucks so they could “burn the bridge,” and offered him $5,000 to join the plot.

On Oct. 5, after being given a polygraph test, Choudhry admitted he lied, authorities said.

Choudry said he and the customer spoke about the possibility of an attack on the bridge but never discussed a plot to do it themselves, court papers said.
