Threat of 'nukes to spare' in N Korea
Peter Alford, Tokyo correspondent
November 18, 2004
NORTH Korea has built enough nuclear weapons to sell some of them to other rogue states or terrorist groups and still retain enough to deter attacks on its territory.
That must be the new baseline assumption for the US and other countries trying to disarm the communist state, according to International Crisis Group president and former Australian foreign minister Gareth Evans.
"It's happened in the last two years," Mr Evans told The Australian from Seoul. "Since we lost track of the spent fuel rods at Yongbyong (nuclear plant), we have to assume they have reprocessed enough plutonium to make six to eight weapons."
A new ICG report says the strong likelihood that North Korea has as many as 10 nuclear bombs -- US intelligence assumes two weapons existed before a 1994 agreement to freeze plutonium production -- makes the task of dismantling the rogue program increasingly urgent.

While six-party talks have continued with results in Beijing, North Korea has probably reprocessed its (8000) fuel rods and may have turned the plutonium into weapons," the report says.
"It almost certainly has enough bombs to deter an attack and still have some to sell to other states or even terrorist groups."

There has been some talk (over the Summer) of a disinformation campaign. I often wonder if the real threat is right in front of our eyes while people are trying to ignore it.
This thread has gone by pretty quickly, it's been a busy time.
Just caught the tail end of an advertisement on Discovery Channel. Tomorrow night (Thursday) at 8pm a new show "Tracking the Terrorists".

I keep thinking back to the anthrax attacks especially with missing crop dusters and tankers (on interstates perhaps - remember those rest rooms shut down along that Cali highway?)

Although there is currently no indication that this has any connection to terrorist activity, the theft is cause for concern. Past information indicates that members of al-Qa'ida may have planned -- or may still be planning -- to disperse biological or chemical agents from crop dusting aircraft. The stolen aircraft has been identified as a Piper PA 25, Pawnee, and is similar to one depicted below. It is registered in Mexico and bears the tail number XBCYP. If you see the aircraft described above, you should immediately contact the TSA General Aviation Hotline at (866) 427-3287." (November 5, 2004) (VIEW PHOTO. Read More...)

"Salt Lake airport nabs weapons galore
Officials at checkpoints have seized 185,078 during past 3 years"

Deseret Morning News
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Security checkpoints at Salt Lake City International Airport seized an astounding 185,078 potential weapons from passengers over the past three years including 75,000 knives, 157 firearms and 400 explosives.
Knives, scissors, shotgun shells and assorted tools are among the 185,078 items officials have seized at the Salt Lake airport.
Laura Seitz, Deseret Morning News
That is an average of 190 such items confiscated each day.
It also means that, on average, one of every 73 passengers who worked through checkpoints in that time surrendered some sort of potential weapon.
That is according to U.S. Transportation Security Administration data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request by the Deseret Morning News. It covers the period from February 2002 through September 2004.
Earl Morris, federal security director at the airport, said he is not surprised that 185,000 items were seized there in that period which would have been enough to arm every passenger on 979 separate, filled-to-capacity Boeing 737s.
"Actually, we take several hundred items on most days of the week" at security checkpoints, Morris said.
"And that's only part of it. We actually find many more. But we allow people who inadvertently bring a pocketknife or something to mail it back to themselves," he says. "They can go to the gift shop and buy an envelope and stamps and bring it back. We put the item in the envelope and seal it while they watch, and then mail it."
Even with so many potential weapons discovered, the Salt Lake City Airport Police arrested only 63 people (about one every two weeks) in that period for charges related to attempting to smuggle weapons through checkpoints, said Barbara Gann, spokeswoman for the Salt Lake City Department of Airports."
Have a good night.
You keep getting better and better with your summaries. How in the heck did you do that "NEWS" insert? That is really cool!
I read so many articles, I'm not sure if I saw a Texas one or not.
Let's check and see what we can come up with...
