BUSH ON COURSE FOR WIN George W Bush is heading for a second term as US President after clinching key states in a closely fought battle for the White House.

A Bush victory in the swing state of Florida eclipsed the win by his Democratic opponent, Senator John Kerry, in another key state, Pennsylvania.

Mr Bush has also performed strongly in the third major battleground state, Ohio, where a victory is crucial for a second term in the White House.

Across the rest of the US, there were few surprises as both candidates held on to their usual support bases.

Earlier, reporters were invited into the White House, where Mr Bush had gathered with his family to watch the results come in.

He said he was feeling "very upbeat".

The US went to the polls following one of the closest, most expensive and bitter election campaigns in history.

The turnout is expected to be one of the highest in history. In several states polling stations had to stay open so people still queuing outside could cast their votes.

To win, Mr Bush or his Democratic rival Mr Kerry needs 270 electoral votes.

A night to remember. Quietly I sit across from our loyal red county neighbour, Chippewa County Michigan. Somehow I am glad to be able to have say I have viewed this hard fought election - regardless of who wins or loses. I may go out on a limb here. If the Democrats lose,I think many of them will be noble in defeat- too much to ask for? I hope not.

The possibility of that good man GWB losing is something that I hope not to see. I have not seen anything like this since 1945 in England. There Churchill lost. In retrospect, he lost because of the most scurilous, vile campaign against him- not fought on issues primarily- merely that he would plunge the English working class into grim pre war conditions (Thanks Daily Mirror).

Well, as someone regally said previously. God bless you all.
