Phil should've retired. Can't see him pulling this out.

Sad ending for his career if true. Bean is going to be the Michael Patrick Flanagan for the '04 cycle, she'll be easily defeated in '06 by a younger and more vital Republican candidate.

I think the repubs let him go. He was an embarassment to Hastert and they knew they would pick up eats in Texas

What's wrong with IL? Has become as socialist as CA and NY.

How OLD is good ol' Phil, anyway? Wasn't he first elected during the Coolidge administration or something?

He's been there since Rumsfeld left to go work for Nixon.

Phil Crane is on ABC 7 Chicago, conceding now. Melissa Bean, D-IL, gives the Dems a pick up.

IL is lost to the GOP for a generation. Formerly safe GOP seats are now going liberal.

Well they screwed up and the Democrats own IL. Bush/Cheney never bothered contesting the state. It seems hard to remember that a lifetime ago the GOP used to post big wins in the Land Of Lincoln. No more.

I agree, she is an abberition. It was a vote against Crane, not a vote for Bean.

I wonder if there is any way we can persuade outgoing Sen. Fitzgerald to run for the House seat in '06. After all, a dozen years ago, Fitzgerald almost upended Crane in the primary. I'd love to see the look on that jackass Ray LaHood's face to have Pete serving in the House next time around.

"Formerly safe GOP seats are now going liberal."

We'll have to wait for someone to compute the Bush-Kerry vote in Crane's dictrict, but in 2000 Bush got 56% of the vote in the district under the lines adopted in 2002 (which are its current lines). I would guesstimate that Bush got 58% in Crane's district in 2004. That does not sound like formerly Republican districts going liberal, it sounds like Crane's constituents chose to show him the door.

We'll get the seat back in 2006. DJ's suggestion of Peter Fitzgerald running for the seat is interesting, but Senator Fitzgerald may decide to get out of politics altogether after the way he was screwed by the IL RINO establishment. The good thing about the district being so Republican is that we don't need someone with 100% name ID to win beat Bean in 2006.

That's an interesting idea, but I don't see it happening. Chances are that the G.O.P. nominee will be a state legialator. One possibility I see is that Melissa Bean, facing likely defeat for reelection, runs for statewide office, like state Treasurer.

BTW, who represents Crane's former constituants in the state legislature?
