Speaking of McGovern, in 1972 Thompson realized late in the campaign that Nixon would win, but thought, right up to poll closing, that it would be a very close race.
It was, of course, one of trhe biggest blowouts of all time.

Then there was his love affair with Jimmy Carter.

This convinces me:
Bush 55%
Kerry 43%
Nader 1%
Even More Confused 1%

1972 election atlas map (BLUE Republican states, RED Democrat states):

Nixon 60.67% ELECTORAL VOTES: 520 96.65%

McGovern 37.52% ELECTORAL VOTES: 17 3.16%
