I'm sure it differs from state to state and even perhaps locality to locality. My policy is that I speak to no one milling around the polling place, whether friend or foe. If they try to approach me they get the frigid treatment.
I had a unique experience at the primary election with outside campaign workers. A lady walked up and handed me a flyswatter from a candidate for County Commission. I asked what her platform was.
"Platform?...What's that?"
I spoke real slowly and asked her why I should vote for her...what does she stand for?
She said "Oh, I don't knw, she's a dear old friend who asked me to help her out."
I'll give you one guess who I didn't vote for.
RAT bye the way.
Generally speaking, and I get this info from my wife who is a first time poll watcher - No election materials of any kind inside the building. That INCLUDES VOTER GUIDES. No poll workers within 100 feet of the entrance to the building. You have to watch those dems. They will put their literature right up by the door or in the windows. If they do, just take them down and throw them away. They KNOW darn well they are not supposed to be doing it. I asked my wife "don't you tell them 'hey, you better move your stuff?" and she said 'heck no, they know better. I just throw it away.'" LOL
