My understanding was the media called the election for algore (in 2000) at 7:49PM EST. Thus, the polls in the Florida Panhandle, being on CST were open for another hour. Estimates range from 10K-18K voters did not vote in the Panhandle.

Polls closed at 7 PM EST in the east, 8 PM EST (7PM CST) in the WEST. 8 - 7:49 = 11 minutes (I think all nets did not agree until 7:52). Jeff Greenfield's book "Oh Waiter, One Order of Crow Please" is the best minute-by-minute account of how the nets screwed up all night long
