Milwaukee mayor says many may have to re-register at polls
Between 15,000 and 20,000 Milwaukee residents who registered to vote in recent months have not had their forms processed and may find themselves unregistered at the polls Tuesday, Mayor Tom Barrett said today.
Barrett said the problem was the sheer volume of registration forms that were completed by groups conducting voter drives, with many forms submitted "at the last minute."
The revelation could add a new level of frustration for voters tomorrow, extending waits that are already expected to be long, if voters find out they need to wait in a second line to re-register before they are able to vote.
Barrett mentioned the problem during a general news conference at which he urged all city residents to vote during non-peak hours, be patient with poll workers and to bring identification with them to the polls.
Responding to a Journal Sentinel question, he acknowledged "well over a thousand" cards had not been entered. He later put the number at between 15,000 and 20,000.
The news conference was then ended.
Barrett chief of staff Patrick Curley later told the Journal Sentinel that the mayor became aware of the volume of cards awaiting entry this morning. City staffers from a variety of departments were shifted to the task today, in hopes of having a supplemental registration list available at each location.
Curley said the hope is all of the cards will be entered onto the lists by morning.
Officials are expecting a record turnout tomorrow for the race between President George W. Bush and Democrat John Kerry.
Poll workers will already be reviewing about 5,500 addresses where buildings may not exist as a result of an agreement reached Sunday in response to a Republican complaint.

LOL! This time it'll be Marlboro Ultra Lights, instead of cartons of Marlboro Reds waiting for them. The Dems gotta appease their anti-tobacco supporters, you know.
On the bright side, maybe 5% were people reregistering at their same address and 90% are outright phoney - both impelled by armies of registration recruiters seeking to up their compensation. They were paid per registrant, not hourly, IIRC.
Hmmm. Could it be that some legitimate registrations were not processed because of the sheer volume of fraud registrations?
Fellow Freepers....I was at the Bush rally today in Milwaukee....fear not and we shall go forward to get our 53% of the vote tomorrow to make null the fraudsters (thus the final fraud adjusted vote will be 50% Bush, 48% Kerry)
Kerry's rally was a bomb, outside in pouring rain. In the meantime 11,000 strong came to see Bush.....

In Wisconsin you can register at the polls so no one will be refused. All you need to do is bring your utility bill for one voting site, your grandma's utility bill for the next voting site and so on so that no illegal voter will be denied their right to vote fraudulently as often as they like.
Personally I think this is designed to hold up the voting lines so there absolutely is a long line waiting when the polls close and the buses from Illinois roll up to vote after closing time.

But these are all provisional no? Which means they have to be verified first...
If there are going to be long lines why not open up new polling locations? Why should voters spend a whole day waiting in line? What kind of economic impact does that have on working people? Will that discourage people from voting at all?
Does it just give the Democrats an excuse to protest the elections? People can vote every year in some kind of election so why is it so hard to cast a proper ballot?
All simple questions with mostly simple solutions. Why is it so hard????? Democrats want it that way. We had 4 years to solve the problems of the last election. Nothing was done. So who is responsible?
The voters. They can oust the do nothings in office.
Playing politics is an excuse to defer charges of inadequacy and inaction. Your local election officials need to be replaced if you have problems voting.
BTW........ the paper and pencil ballots we use are still the most accurate.
Democrats run Milwaukee so if anyone is disenfranchised, it will be because of democrats incompetence.
Remember that Marquette & UW Milwaukee students also voted multiple times in 2000. In the 2002 gubernatorial election, mentally disabled people in Kenosha County were bribed with free bingo games by Doyle and the Rats. Seriously.
No, why would they be provisional when Wisconsinites have been able to register at the polls for over 20 years? I've never pre-registered in my life.
