Malzberg Debuts as WWRL Morning Host
After 25-years at WABC Radio in New York, NewsMax.com contributor Steve Malzberg starts Monday as drive-time morning host on New York's WWRL 1600 AM.
The conservative stalwart teams up with New York Daily News columnist and Al Sharpton biographer Karen Hunter - a radio pairing that's sure to provoke fireworks.
"The addition of Steve to the RL family represents a next step in RLs goal of becoming a listening post and sounding board for the New York market. " WWRL program director Rennie Bishop said Friday. "The morning show will continue its upbeat urban talk format bringing fresh, diverse and balanced viewpoints to the audience."
And with Malzberg on board, WWRL is likely to be making some news. Known as one of the most prolific newsbreakers at WABC, his interviews were regularly covered by the New York Post and Daily News.
Months before anyone had ever heard of the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth, for instance, Malzberg got word they were organizing from Vietnam veterans expert B.G. Burkett, and gave his audience a sneak preview on what turned out to be the most politically significant story of the presidential campaign.
When media mogul Steve Brill announced that Sen. Hillary Clinton had fudged records of her meetings with 9/11 families, he dropped the bombshell in an interview with Malzberg.
When firebrand New York City councilman and would-be mayor Charles Barron explained that it was merely "black hyperbole" when he told an audience he wanted to "slap" a white person for his own mental health, it was because Malzberg had him cornered.
And the conservative talker was the only interviewer to confront Clinton National Security Advisor Sandy Berger about his former boss's admission that he turned down a chance to arrest Osama bin Laden - more than a year before the 9/11 Commission put the same question to Clinton himself.
Malzberg's confrontational style makes him unique in his industry. He's willing to apply the rhetorical rubber hose to guests - but somehow manages not to alienate them. So Democrat and Republican newsmakers return time and again to his microphone to break stories.
The veteran talker promises to keep the excitement going at his new home, explaining Friday, "Karen Hunter and I disagree on most major issues, and we plan to present those disagreements in a very passionate, informative and entertaining way. . . When folks tune in...they won't want to tune out."

hes on with a co-host......this really sucks
Now all I have is alien abduction stories to listen to at night? Not good.
Maybe now I have a shot at getting a decent night's sleep.
art bell.......ugh
Heard about 45 min. today. If Hunter's a registered Republican, I must be a Kerry supporter ;-) It's an "urban" station...which is obvious just by listening to their news reports. A caller told the hosts that she'd no longer listen to WWRL because they've brought Steve Malzberg there.
I'm in Brooklyn, and could not tune in AM 1600, so I listened for about 45 minutes via internet stream. His co-host was as ignorant and insulting to Malzberg as the callers. It's a "Black Owned" station catering to the Black "Community." He was on defense the entire time I monitored the show.
I emailed Steve, saying I hope he didn't sign a long contract.
You couldn't go past 45 minutes either, I see.
I win......I listened for a half second.
where is it broadcast from..very weak signal, lots of static, and i am in NJ get most 100%
No...I'm going to listen more. I've met Steve. In fact, my daughter used to date one of his friends. What happened was that I thought he was on from 9-noon. Turned it on at ~ 9 on the way to golf...
Even the streaming audio was breaking up. It's probably a 50 watt transmitter, as opposed to WABC's 50,000.
You'd think WOR or WMCA would have snapped him up quick.
yes,i liked steve,but WWRL???
I get the impression he did not leave 77 AM WABC NYC for a career move.
Something is wrong. Steve was king of overnight ratings.
Tough luck for Steve.
I don't know what happened either. half the callers to the show this morning was calling him a racist. how can he put up with that?
Not long with a co-host as the last word in this kangaroo court.
Co-host radio talk shows rarely work out in my opinion, with Curtis and Cooby and the Ken and what's his name the notable exceptions.
It just seems to be too much friction, and with Steve, there will be lots of animosity as soon as this female cohost and the callers begin calling him a Nazi and bigot, etc.
This is really a puzzzling move, seeing that Malzberg was just getting well known nationally.

It just seems there is too much friction with two opinionated people. And with Steve, there will be lots of animosity as soon as his female cohost and the callers begin calling him a Nazi and bigot, etc.
This is really a puzzling move for Malzberg. He was just getting well known nationally.
