As I said, my suspicion is that they don't want to share the spotlight with a new competing civil rights movement.

No, they are finally waking up to the reality that the Democratic party has been a destructive to their lives. They are not concerned about the 'gays'as a minority movement.

If they were to be concerned with another minority group it would be the Hispanics.
