It's not uncommon for candidates to make last-minute changes to their travel schedules to take advantage of a state that all of sudden comes into play or to shore up support in a state that was supposed to be safe.
The latter applies to a late travel change for John Kerry.
The Democratic presidential candidate has added Michigan to his schedule on Monday and aides acknowledged that it's tighter there than they had expected. Last week, the Kerry campaign increased their advertising buy in Michigan for the final week, by $500,000 dollars.
Kerry strategists thought the state was safe 10 days ago and did not plan to visit Michigan as recently as last Monday. Now they will go there on the eve of the election.
Four years ago, Michigan supported Democrat Al Gore. The last time the state voted Republican was for the first Bush in the White House, George H.W. Bush, in 1988.

ha..ha..ha. i love it!
If nothing else, it will get him out of Florida and Ohio.
I already voted here. Bush, Mike Rogers, and Joe Hune.
that would be nice. I think he has given up on Florida as it is anyhow. I sure do hope the voters in Florida will give up on him as well!!
They should be grateful.
Land Slide !
Maybe if he checks in with Zogby, he'll change his plans...The Zog has him leading everywhere but Ohio. Geesh!
Creative freeper name!
Good
Comments? Kerry defending Michigan on Nov 1 and a tie in the popular vote? Impossible.

Just when you think you have a handle on the election, the odd happens. Rain in the Dem parts of Michigan on election day, and not the Pubbie parts. Some of the deterioation in the Kerry base has shown up in Michigan, particularly among blacks. Kerry will probably still win Michigan, but it does suggest that Bush has more hail mary passes available to him if Plan A goes wrong, then Kerry does.
Don't think for one second that he has given up on Florida.
Its simply not true. He has an ad barrage that makes me sick of hearing the TV.
However, I think he now has too many other states that he has to rush fire control to, and that's all to the good
Maybe they saw the weather report. In the urban lower portion of the state they are expecting rain throughout the day.
With that schedule, they better damn well have confidence in their numbers..otherwise I'd expect Bush in OH, FL, OH, FL, OH, FL....hehe
And Zogby has K up, what, +7 in Michigan? Why would sKerry go to a state he's got locked? Zogby lost it in 2002. He still hasn't found it.
