I agree that it makes sense that he would have started moving immediately after making the tape and before it was aired but I think he would be travelling more incognito. A caravan of 10 vans seems like it would stand out like a sore thumb in that part of the world. They may have sent out several dummy convoys to distract any possible tracking.
How could anyone possibly identify where that tape was made? A brown sheet on the wall... it could have been made in a cave in Afghanistan, or a garage in Cleveland. Unless the yellow bathrobe was one-of-a-kind like O.J.'s Bruno Maglis.
