DeForest Soaries Jr., the chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) wants to put any fears to rest. He told us that the machines will be closely guarded, can be checked for tampering, and can't be infected with viruses because they aren't networked. He added that electronic machines "do recounts more effectively than lever machines," and certain models can produce a printout of every vote.
So, what do voters need to know on Nov. 2? Anyone with a question should immediately ask a poll worker. If he or she can't help, ask a supervisor or call the EAC (1-866-747-1471). "No question from a voter is ever a silly question." said Soaries.
His advice:
1. Study the sample ballot you got in the mail.
2. Know the location of your polling place.
3. Familianize yourself with the type of voting machine being used.
4. Know your rights. IF YOUR NAME ISN'T LISTED, USE A PROVISIONAL BALLOT. It's up to election officials to determine if you're registered.
