Something never set right with me about this guy.

How any independent thinker could endorse an elite prick like Kerry is beyond me.

Bob Smith didn't lose the 2002 primary for liberalism. He lost because he was an unpredictable flake. The fact that he would have surely lost to Jeanne Shaheen didn't help him, either.

I recall that in one of the debates Kerry happened to mention Bob Smith's name in a favorable light, but I did not make the connection.

Poor Bob Smith, so angry with the NH GOP for denying him renomination that he blames GWB. I don't think John Sununu held such a grudge: by being quiet in his private storm (It was GWB who "fired" Sununu for GHWB.) Sununu lived to see his son elected to the Senate in 2002.

Bob Smith has lowered himself in the eyes of those who supported his renomination in 2002.

What about this John Eisenhower? Is this David's father? Is he the author of the acclaimed book on Winfield Scott?

One definition of a liberal is: unpredictable flake. Other definitions include: predictable flake, fake patriot flake, anti-american flake, socialist flake, etc. etc. Anyone who would support a mass. liberal like kerry is a liberal (and flake). cheers

When I first saw this headline, the name that kept coming to my mind was John B. Anderson. But then I realized that he was never a senator, never even ran for senator, but was a liberal House member from Rockford, IL, who rejected both Carter and Reagan.

Too liberal? The former NH senator had one of the most conservative records in the Senate. Personally, I can't blame Bob for being bitter. The Republican party and administration is nothing more than Democrat-lite these days. One new government program after another...prescription plans, education plans, CFR just to name a few items. Bush and company are NOT conservatives.

Maybe I have it wrong, but Smith wasn't a RINO. He was more of a libertarian conservative who broke with the GOP because he said it was too liberal.

In other words, he's a loose cannon, not a team player. He and kerry have nothing in common politically. This can only be read as sour revenge on the GOP.

Bob Smith is a former New Hampshire officeholder. He served on a small town shcool board in the 70's, ran for Congress in unsuccessfully in 1982 and successfully in 1984. He was elected to the Senate in 1990 and was narrowly reelected in 1996 against second-tier opponent. In 1999, he ran in implausible campaign for President. With no chance of winning the nomination, he became an independent in 1999. When the Chairman of a committee died a few months later, he became a Republican again and was allowed to assert his seniority to become chairman. In 2002, he was challenged for reelection by then-Gov. Jeanne Shaheed and faced certain defeat. But he was defeated in the primary by John Sununu, Jr., who went on to become Senator. He didn't respond to his defeat gracefully, as this news indicates.

"The John Birch Society, which supports ardent conservatism, chose Smith over North Carolina Republican Jesse Helms as the country's most conservative senator."

Why do Republicans hate conversative?

Wasn't Smith portraying himself as the true conservative in 2000?
