For some reason strokes often take away the ability to speak, but leave the mind clear. I have taken care of folks who had tears running down their faces because they were not able to say what they wanted. Either they make sounds or mix words or something similar.

You just described our friend. When she gets upset while trying to speak, she sounds like morse code. When her family or we don't understand her she get louder and faster with the dot/dits. Eventually no one can understand her. My wife and her oldest daughter do a good job until she reaches the frentic stage.
