There is nothing wrong with being a sports fan, but I think that our society is obsessed with sports and other forms of entertainment. Maybe it is a form of laziness. I am amazed that my friends put all their time and energy into following sports and know nothing about politics, economics, etc. We as citizens have an obligation to put some time into making sure that we elect good leaders and that we understand what direction our country should take. That takes some effort on our part. End of rant.

This "obession" is the product of endless hype of sports (particularly the "professional" variety), entertainment (the "cult of celebrity" anyone), and other pablum. This is not a coincidence.

"Bread and circuses" did much to destroy the ancient Roman Republic, and these things are a deliberate infusion of "circuses" (mindless entertainment to distract the populace form the issues of the day), in a deliberate attempt to weaken, then destroy, the American Republic, in order to put something less wholesome in its place...
