Your post sparked a memory - about thirty years ago a man I worked for described how, when he was a boy in New Jersey, they would broadcast on the radio the execution of someone convicted of murder. He said that the announcer's step by step intonation of what was happening as the prisoner was led from his cell to the execution chamber was positively chilling. This man said: "Let me tell you, it IS a deterrant to hear that" I've never forgotten and can still recall how he told that story.
