Austria scraps Arnie statue

Plans to build an 80ft statue of Arnold Schwarzenegger's Terminator character in his Austrian home town have been scrapped because he's backing President Bush.

The steel abstract design was unveiled in a blaze of publicity last year with public and private backers putting up the money for the £3.5 million project.

But the southern city of Graz is angry that its most famous son is backing Bush in the upcoming US election campaign and supported the war in Iraq.

Project manager Herwig Hoeller said: "Yes, the project has been shelved because it no longer has the backing among the population that it had at the start when he was elected.

"I think I must be the only one in this town that still wants the project to go ahead."

There are also calls to rename the Arnold Schwarzenegger football stadium and Graz Deputy Mayor Walter Ferk said the city was also considering taking back an honorary award of a ring to the governor.

The statue was set to tower over other more traditional statues of lesser recognised individuals such as composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - or the Austrian Emperor Kaiser Franz Joseph.

What's wrong with these people? No wonder Schwarzenegger's father left a country full of people as spiteful as this as soon as he could.

I would think they'd want to promote Ahnold instead of being known for another famous politician from Austria. This reminds me of the Dems in Boston trying to block naming a tunnel after Ted Williams because he was a Republican.

Actually. That is about the tackiest statue I have ever seen. 3.5 million for a statue of a robot. These people are insane to begin with.

They're Socialists, what can you expect?

Forget the fact that Arnold started here with nothing, and became a political powerhouse.

All that matters to Socialists is ideology.

"...lesser recognised individuals such as composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - or the Austrian Emperor Kaiser Franz Joseph."

100 Years from now, we will be amazed at how stupid our grandparents were for considering Ahrnold to be important or even relevant.

The good people of Austria have come to their senses. He doesn't deserve more than a small plaque on the wall of the house he grew up in.

Mozart and Franz Joseph rate statues. Ahrnold doesn't.

I was curious about that. I found a table with the results of the 2003 election in Graz. The strongest party is the conservative ÖVP with 36.12%. The right-wing FPÖ got 7.98%. Now for the lefties: The socialist SPÖ got 25.89%, the Green Party 8.26%, and the Communist Party KPÖ got a whopping 20.75%!! So, while there are conservatives there, too, the majority of Grazians is left-wing, it seems.

Whatever; everybody knows the Austrians are crazy.

"Whatever; everybody knows the Austrians are crazy."

The mystery is, when and what caused Austria's decline into craziness? Any ideas?

The governorship of California is no small post. But, even if you set that aside and think that it was dumb to put up a statue in the first place, if you think it was dumb to choose a terminator, if you think it was dumb not to recognize his political success, and if you think it was dumb to name the stadium after him -- well it's even more dumb to change the stadium's name and not put up the statue simply because he now supports President Bush. That's insane.

Oh..... the actor.

I was trying to figure out what Austria has against Mr. Palmer, outside of the fact Arnie's Army is larger than Austria's Home Guard... and better dressed.

When I was in Germany, some Germans told me the Austrian flag was designed the way it is (symmetrical top and bottom) so the Austrians could put their flag up properly each day as they were too stupid to figure out which side would be the top if it were not symmetrical.

Hm, that's a really good question; I probably don't know enough about Austria to answer it. Some people, like the great Austrian writer Thomas Bernhard, think that Austria's main problem is a certain schizophrenia that came about when the Austrians tried to convince themselves that Hitler was a German and they weren't actually with us (the Germans) during WWII but rather our first victim, when in fact they were at least as enthusiastic Nazis as we were. But that's only a theory, of course...

Q: What's this: It has got six legs and is standing at the Austrian border?

A: An Austrian border guard and his German shepherd dog.

AAARGH I messed it up... The question is:

Q: What's this: It has got six legs, is standing at the Austrian border and has an IQ of ten?

Seems my own IQ isn't much higher...
