A 5 Eyewitness News crew in Iraq may have been just a door away from materials that could be used to detonate nuclear weapons. The evidence is in videotape shot by Reporter Dean Staley and Photographer Joe Caffrey at or near the Al Qaqaa munitions facility.

PICTURES AT http://www.kstp.com/article/stories/S3741.html?cat=64

The video shows a cable locking a door shut. That cable is connected by a copper colored seal. A spokesperson for the International Atomic Energy Agency told 5 Eyewitness News that seal appears to be one used by their inspectors. "In Iraq they were used when there was a concern that this could have a, what we call, dual use purpose, that there could be a nuclear weapons application."

5 Eyewitness News continues to develop new leads and uncover new developments in this story. Watch 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS at 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 for more insight on these seals the the weapons discovered in Iraq.

I've seen and heard direct evidence to the contrary (i.e. 101st soldiers, spy sat photos, NBC embed testimony, etc.) Plus, the abc video had no time and date stamp, let alone context/location regarding their video. Even the abc reporterette said the soldiers in the picture were U.N. (don't worry, I know she meant U.S.). And not one voice over, caption, etc. of an expert verifying the explosives' type, wieght, location, etc.).

Oh btw, welcome to FR. The "Reply" button is down on the Left.

There is NO evidence that this video was even taken at Al Qa-Qaa.

There is NO evidence that the drums contain the types of explosives in question.

Updated: 10/28/2004 08:26:06 PM - VIDEO

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS exclusive footage brings to light new questions about unguarded explosives in Iraq.

Officials with the 101st airborne division and G.P.S. technology confirms our position on or near the southern edge of the Al Qaqaa installation back on April 18, 2003 - nine days after the fall of Baghdad.

Some 377 tons of high explosives - HMX and RDX and PETN - are now missing Al-Qaqaa, and questions have arisen about what the United States knew about the site and what it did to secure it.

On the April 2003 visit, our crews witnessed soldiers using bolt cutters to get into bunkers. Inside, they found many containers marked "explosives." At least one set of crates carried the name "Al-Qaqaa State Establishment."

Military personnel told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that the area visited was secured by an outside perimeter. Our crew said the area felt more like no-mans-land.

"At one point, there was a group of Iraqis driving around in a pickup truck," said former 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS reporter Dean Staley. "We were worried they might come near us."

Photojournalist Joe Caffrey recalls seeing Iraqis watching them as they went through the bunkers. As his crew and the troops from the 101st departed each bunker, they left them open.

"We weren't quite sure what we were looking at, but we saw so much of it and it didn't appear that this was being secured in any way," said photojournalist Joe Caffrey. "It was several miles away from where military people were staying in their tents."

Caffrey also recalls overhearing a military briefing after curious soliders had encountered another bunker.

"Apparently two soldiers had gone in to these bunkers, lit a match for light and the fumes or powder... whatever it was, exploded and burned their clothes off," he said. "Shortly thereafter, everyone was told to stay away from these bunkers"

Another bunker encountered by the 101st Airborne and the 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS crew was locked with chains and a seal left by inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency. According to the IAEA, the seal marked a facility suspected of holding "dual-purpose" materials that could be used to produce nuclear weapons.

5 EYEWITNESS NEWS and experts across the country are working to learn more from these pictures and find out exactly just how close they were to Al Qaqaa.

Stay tuned for more details as they become available exclusively from 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS.

I expected it was an ABC affiliate since only ABC is giving a flip about this new info (as far as I know......has it been mentioned by any actual reporters......not talking heads like Matthews etc. on other networks?)

Local reporters tend to not be as biased and more objective.

From what I have seen the soldiers, I believe Rush played a clip of one today, said that there were no IAEA seal when they were there. Each seal has a number, so I can imagine they can be traced to an area.

Time for a little Freeper gumshoe-ing.

Barrels of perchlorate normally refered to as AP. It is an oxidizer use to make solid fuel for rockets.

DID NOT SEE ANY RDX - HMX IN THE VIDEO.

From what I have read and heard, the seals meant nothing because there were huge ventilation slats in the sides of the building that could easily be removed.

The IAEA has a response to that point:

ABC said the inspection report noted that the seals at Al-Qaqaa may have been useless because the storage bunkers had ventilation slats on the sides that could have been removed to give looters access to the explosives.

But Fleming said the inspectors had also checked the ventilation slats to ensure they had not been tampered with, and that they concluded "the confinement was sufficient" as long as the site was regularly checked. They could no longer do that once they pulled out just before the invasion.

http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/printstory.mpl/world/2871177

According to the above, IAEA spokesman Fleming says they could tell if the vents got breached.

I'd like more details on that. See if David Blaine could fool the IAEA, and get in through the vents without detection.

I honestly haven't watched any other local news.

A look at the other three local news websites and not a word about the new video or the story in general at all.

The lead story around here today is that they will seek the death penalty for the alleged abductor of Dru Sjodin and Jesse Ventura speaking out about why he supports Kerry.

The anchor at the local ABC affiliate is a Republican. Cindy Brucatto. She worked for Gov. Arne Carlson.

I can vouch for the fact that how it was reported on ABC was not how it's been reported locally on KSTP.

Ammonium Perchlorate (AP) IS THIS WHAT IS IN VIDEO?

http://www.nar.org/NARfrompres9901.html

Section 1: Technical Issues Regarding Explosives Use of AP Based Propellant

A. Explosives Potential

Our associations consulted with engineers and technical experts regarding potential explosives use of ammonium perchlorate (AP) based rocket propellants. Based on this technical input, we believe AP propellants represent little, if any, threat for explosives use. In order for AP to be used most effectively as an detonable explosive, it must be formulated in ways which make it a bad rocket propellant. In particular, AP would have to be:

Ground to a size below 20 microns average;
Combined with an additional accelerants not currently part of sport rocket motor propellant formulations;
Removed from the binder used in propellant to improve its efficiency.
Even if these three criteria are met, AP in general does not propagate a adequate detonation wave, a key characteristic of a good high explosive.

A sport rocket propellant must be classified as UN 1.3 or 1.4 as a prerequisite to a motor with such propellant being accepted for certification testing by the NAR or TRA. Such motors must pass specific UN-standard tests conducted by the ATF of Explosives or Canadian equivalent that demonstrate that it is not detonable. The details of these tests may be found in "Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods: Tests and Criteria", United Nations publication ST/SG/AC.10/11 Rev. 1.

B. Weapons Potential

We also consulted our engineering and technical experts regarding the potential use of high power rocket (HPR) materials for conversion to

Suitable rocket vehicle;
An explosive warhead and fusing mechanism;
An accurate guidance system.
While HPR activity has created suitable rocket motors and vehicles for potential use as a weapon, relative payload capacities are relatively low. Our associations have no reports or evidence of hobby participants seeking development of warheads or fusing mechanisms. The most obvious barrier to successful weapons development would be the creation of an accurate guidance system. No commercial units exist in the hobby market for such guidance. None are required for hobbyist activities currently practiced or contemplated. Additionally, we believe that better point and area weapons available on the black market for those seeking to commit criminal or terrorist acts.

C. Criminal or Terrorist Potential

None of the associations represented here know of any evidence of either AP propellant or HPR materials being used in support of a criminal or terrorist act. Our position is that if either AP propellant or HPR materials were suitable for such acts, their use would have been made known to the leadership within our organizations. If the ATF has evidence of pathological use of any AP propellants in criminal or terrorist activities, we respectfully request that the ATF share such information with us in an effort to further the education of our respective memberships as to the potential hazards of this material.
