Rep. Stehpanie Herseth (D-SD) said on 10/27 in a televised debate that she would vote for President George W. Bush if her vote was needed to break an electoral college deadlock.
Herseth made the comment in a debate with ex-state Senator Larry Diedrich.
She was asked by a reporter how she would vote if neither Bush or Kerry won the election outright.
Herseth said she would be guided by South Dakota voters, who are projected to vote for President Bush by a wide margin.
'I represent South Dakota, and I'm goping to put South Dakota first.' (ahead of my party)

Wow, a Dem with principles. I must remember there are more like Zell.
I bet many will bubble Bush in on their ballots too.
Not that much of a sacrifice, given that Rs have 30 states with Congressional majorities and will add a 31st (Texas) on Tuesday.
She's simply a politician who knows what side of the bread her butter is on. Or is that redundant?
She's only an elector if the EV is tied, and even then, she's not an elector. She's a congresscritter using her congresscritter powers.
I think one of the papers came up with 31 possible combinations where this could happen 269-269..hopefully it wont be needed!
No, we talked about this on an earlier thread. It's hardly an endorsement. She's just saying that she would bow to the will of the state's voters if the election came to the House.
Wow, she must be in a tight reelectiong fight...
That's right, Ive forgotten my college civics class..she would vote as part of the South Dakota state delegation right?
The Argus-Leader paper in SD has just released polls saying she trails her GOP opponent.
She's an Emily's List Democrat and just today was overtaken in the polls by her challenger, according to Zogby.
I think the rules is that she would discuss with her state house delegation as on how to vote.
This is an invalid circular reference because if South Dakota votes Bush, she wouldn't be an elector in the first place.
If Bush loses SD and she becomes an elector, it would be against the sill of SD for her to vote for Bush.
Good for her!
Does SD only have one congressperson right now?
That will fire up her Democratic base!
I'm not sure what you're saying here. She is the only House member from SD. The state only has one.
If so she's an invalid elector for Kerry just like Sherrod Brown of Ohio. I wonder how many more are there?
It's been that way for several years. We aren't growing in populaton very fast, if at all.
