Girls can be cruelest bullies in school
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | Thursday, October 28, 2004 | Karen Roebuck

The harshest bullies in schools are girls who strike with words rather than fists but often are unaware of how much pain they inflict, according to an expert who will be teaching local educators this week how to bring victims and their tormentors together.

"With that movie 'Mean Girls,' I think there's this stereotype almost that girls want to hurt girls, want to be cruel," said Cheryl A. Dellasega, a professor of humanities at Pennsylvania State University.

"I don't think there's this inherent meanness in girls. ... I think girls use mean behaviors."

While many girls do not consider themselves bullies, Dellasega's program "Club Ophelia" is designed to show them that they are and to convince them to behave better.

Baby, if I made you mad
For something I might have said,
Please, let´s forget the past,
The future looks bright ahead,
Don´t be cruel to a heart that´s true.
I don´t want no other love,
Baby it´s just you I´m thinking of.

John Kerry and John Edwards living proof of this.

This is nuts. There are mean girls and there are pleasant girls just like there are mean candidates for president and there are pleasant candidates for president.

There was a Seinfeld episode about this. Jerry and George are talking about bullying and they ask Elaine if girls bully. She responds:

"No. We just tease them until they develop an eating disorder."

(I guess you had to see it.)

I think kids can be pretty cruel without realizing it. I consider myself to be a pretty nice guy, but I cringe thinking about some of the things we said and did to dumb kids in the third grade.

How is a professor of humanties qualified to speak on behavior with any degree(no pun intended) of authority?

No soup for Cheryl! Next!

If no-one knew, Lindsey ("Mean Girls") Lohan now qualifies for obligatory pictures. I just hope she's well; I haven't heard what became of her mysterious, life-threatening illness.

Uh...using mean behaviors is mean. It's, like, part of the definition.

Just one more excellent reason to home school.

IMO, the difference between mean boys and mean girls is that the girls will continue their cruelty until they've completely destroyed their target. Boys seem to get it out of their systems and move on much more rapidly.

Girls are very cruel to each other. They aren't kidding. But, I don't see how programs are going to change anything. And it does start very young. I was talking to one woman whose daughter was ostracized because she couldn't put her hair into pony tails. Oh, and this was Kindergarten. Just another reason why I homeschool.

When I was at elementary/high school, it was the girls who bullied me more than the boys. There is a perception that it is only some boys who bully but it's the girls were worse. I really don't know why. One experience was when just because I wanted to play soccer with some boys in my class, instead of "girl" things like sit around and talk about "cute" boys, I was called names such as "tomboy". In my family I was always taught that girls and boys are equal and no different. As a result, I was later homeschooled thanks to bullying until I attended University.
