Don't know. In WWII it was the Fickle Finger of Fate (and even painted on some bombers).

Why are red headed Aussies nick named "Blue"? And what's up with the fetish about stoning crows? PETA's gonna get you for that. Honestly, I'm not sure why we associate the gesture with avian acrobatics but the expression has been around for decades.
