I try my best to learn about the colloquialisms of certain nations but the American "Flipping the Bird" escapes me. Should I stay unenlightened or should I have this expression explained to me ?

A mystified Australian.

Middle finger salute, supposedly a relic of the Battle of Agincourt when it was first given to the French by the English (how appropriate) Long Bowmen to show they could still draw and shoot. Now most often used by American drivers to comment on other Americans' driving skills.
