We act like friendly countries, but at the street level, where it counts, Russia spies on us as aggressively as they did during the Cold War. They do not regard us as friends, I am afraid.
With few exceptions, nations don't really have "friends". Only "common interests". The most notable exception, probably, is the "special relationship" between the US and the UK.
Russia, in particular, has never considered another country its "friend". Nor will they ever. Their history has been disrupted by too many invasions to be otherwise.
But so long as we have "common interests", the Russians will cooperate.
