Anybody who doubts Russia (Putin) was up to his ass in Oil-For-Food Money is CRAZY-ping.

Russian special forces troops moved many of Saddam Hussein's weapons and related goods out of Iraq and into Syria in the weeks before the March 2003 U.S. military operation, The Washington Times has learned.

John A. Shaw, the deputy undersecretary of defense for international technology security, said in an interview that he believes the Russian troops, working with Iraqi intelligence, "almost certainly" removed the high-explosive material that went missing from the Al-Qaqaa facility, south of Baghdad.

"The Russians brought in, just before the war got started, a whole series of military units," Mr. Shaw said. "Their main job was to shred all evidence of any of the contractual arrangements they had with the Iraqis. The others were transportation units."

Mr. Shaw, who was in charge of cataloguing the tons of conventional arms provided to Iraq by foreign suppliers, said he recently obtained reliable information on the arms-dispersal program from two European intelligence services that have detailed knowledge of the Russian-Iraqi weapons collaboration.

Most of Saddam's most powerful arms were systematically separated from other arms like mortars, bombs and rockets, and sent to Syria and Lebanon, and possibly to Iran, he said.

The Russian involvement in helping disperse Saddam's weapons, including some 380 tons of RDX and HMX is still being investigated, Mr. Shaw said.

I like it. The other variant I was floating is that Putin is caught in a lie post-Beslan and Dubya's got him by the short hairs. He gives up Syria and provides intel.. Syria reads the tea leaves (recently) and begins to tilt a la Libya...

And a banner head.

Their page design is a bit screwy.....the story is not really packaged properly with the dominant photo and putting a headline like that across the photo with another headline to the right just looks bad. But, at least it got front page treatment.....it hits you in the face.

The Dems, NYT and CBS will stay on message and try to play out the clock even if there is corroboration. Kerry planned for this October surprise and he has nothing else.

i like your take on it - it seems that we may have uncovered a lot more. this would be a great strategy for protecting us and a good way to introdcue us to the real news which is - russia took WMDs out of Iraq before we got there and may even talk about it!

Something this big hitting the front page of the Wash Times will be referenced by others. Not the NYT obviously since they already have finished their edition. But, it will be addressed on the tv news tomorrow and in Friday's editions of the Wash Post....and perhaps even the NYT itself.

This is not something that they will ignore. Count on it.

If I am wrong, I will eat my words I guess. But, with this story getting all the attention (much more than I expected....I thought it would be gone yesterday and replaced with a new story)...anything new that comes out about it will be given attention, especially some wild claim about Russian involvement.

The DUmmies have taken up the Lawrence O'Donnell defense on their thread:

"Lies! Lying creepy liars!"

They're freeping out, and have no idea where to turn on this one.
