Our Law School is giving a professor and a group of students a stipend to go to PA and get the Democrat vote -- they have even excused the from missing class on Tuesday.
Is this permissible? There must be some legal or ethical issue here? Our school also gets federal dollars so they are subject to federal restrictions.
What do you suggest we do about it? Think we can stop it?
Call your state office of the Republican Party. They should have people who can get right on this. Seems to me this is an illegal campaign contribution.
You might check with FIRE (http://www.thefire.org/). They have had some major wins against Educational Tomfoolery -- under which category I believe this fits. They have feisty good lawyers on board and know the Universities only too well (started by a Professor). It is surely worth exposing. The Alumni might like to know, too -- isn't it their money??? It surely stinks.
Is it a public or private school? If it's private, I don't see any legal impediment.
Supporting a candidate or a political party's position could possibly yank your school student government's tax exempt status away.
I'd persue this aggressively, if I were you. Call the IRS and rat them out.
Please tell me it's not the University of Michigan, where I went.
A private school receiving federal dollars from, e.g. the Department of Education.
So, they are subject to federal restrictions on their activities.
Harvard is a private institution but it accepts money in federal aid and is therefore subject to the same restrictions and requirements that a public university must conform to.

Even if it's a private school, they probably are organized as a tax exempt organization. I know when I was in student government back in college many moons ago, we couldn't give money to either political party without losing our tax exempt status (which was great because the leftists that controlled the school would have given money to the communists if it were up to them.)
I have a feeling a quick call to the IRS will start an investigation and get this school to stop doing what they're doing real quick. It's one thing to allow students to go to support a candidate without paying them, but when you start giving them stipends for their work, it doesn't pass the smell test.
Specifically to get out the Dem vote? Or just to get out the vote?
Ask them directly -- if they deny it, advise them that you are aware of certain reports contradicting their denials.
Advise them directly -- If some/any of these reports are true, you WILL report them to FEC, IRS, and any state or regional educational accreditation agencies, and follow through until you are satisfied.
When they ask why this concerns you... simnply say
WE THE PEOPLE ARE WATCHING YOU!
Then say..... "Have a nice day..."
