Posted on 10/27/2004 11:08:29 AM PDT by Gucho

By Steve Keating ST LOUIS (Reuters) - Boston Red Sox fans awoke on Wednesday with their impossible dream on the brink of becoming a reality.

The Red Sox will step onto Busch Stadium field tonight under a lunar eclipse needing one more victory over the St Louis cardinals to clinch their first World Series title since 1918 and put to rest forever the "Curse of the Bambino."

One name comes to mind: Bill Buckner.

I have a friend who grew up in the Boston area and we both agreed that if the BOSOX can't win one of the next four games then the "curse" is for real.

The Sox will win, they have too many bats not to.

On Odin's day in the year of choosing
The moon and a city's feet shall be blood red
The long-cursed will be victorious
Damon's arms will seal it all.

I just want them to win for the reason I don't have to hear about "the curse" anymore. That will just leave the Cubs in the cursed ranks, and their ownership is a factor as to why that curse may never leave.

Suppan is no Bill Buckner, but he made a humongous mistake. There is a world of difference between 2 outs and a man on second, and 1 out, a run scored, and a man on third.

By the way, there is no truth to the rumor that while the 3rd base coach was yelling GO, GO, GO, someone with a Dominican accent was yelling DON'T GO, DON'T GO, DON'T GO.

I knew LaRussa couldn't do it!

So its LaRussa who is causing Rollens, Edmonds, and Renterrias batting slumps, not to forget Suppan's base running? I just hope they win at least one game to show the country what brought them to the Series.

". . . but I've got a nice bottle of Middleton's Very Rare Irish whiskey with my name all over it."

Now yer talking; hope the Sox help you and you don't have to wait another day to enjoy!

His staff has been outcoached and his pitchers have not hit the plate.

Gammons had a column in ESPN.com today that talked about how the sox coaches have put together a game plan that has worked very well.

2 arguments in favor of the DH:

Pedro Martinez at the plate (OK he did draw a walk though)

Jeff Soupcan (lol) on the basepaths

And Buckner gets all the grief for one play....

The fact is that Calvin Schiraldi blew up, Bob Stanley threw a wild pitch and Buckner should have been pulled for defense. The guy played his heart out and in pain every day. He left the game with almost 3,000 hits. The play that went through is legs was the culmination of a bad inning. Don't forget, in game 7 they had the lead as well and the bullpen blew it again.

I hope they win so maybe he can sleep in peace for once.

We'll see how things are in the near future. I had very little hope left when the soxwere 3 down, I have very little doubt now the sox will win it all. Cautiously optimistic, just like with the election.

It makes for a more interesting game without the DH....imagine a pitcher has to finish an inning so as to not kill the bullpen.

Sppan was getting it over the plate, just right where the Sox could smack it around, albeit mostly long fly outs.

Marquis suffers against deep lineups.

He had a 5.34 ERA and 1.57 WHIP in his last 5 regular-season starts, and followed that with 4 H, 4 BB, 0 K, 3 R/ER in 3.1 vs. the Dodgers and 5 H, 2 BB, 2 K, 3 R/ER in 4 IP vs. the Astros.

The Sox can become the first team in MLB history to sweep a WS and knock four different starters out before the 5th, in addition to becoming the 4th team to never trail during a WS ('63 Dodgers against the Yankees, '66 Orioles against the Dodgers, and Tony LaRussa's '89 A's against the Giants) and, of course, the first team to win 8 straight games in the same post-season. The Cards could join the '89 Giants and the '47 Dodgers as the only two WS teams to not have a starter go a full 5 innings.

The Red Sox have scored seven first-inning runs in the first three games of this World Series. They're the first team in 44 years to do that, and just the fourth in history. The others, according to the Elias Sports Bureau: 1909 Pirates, 1958 Braves, 1960 Yankees. No one has ever scored more first-inning runs than this through three games, so the Red Sox could set the record tonight against Marquis who has given up a 1st-inning run in 2 of his last 4 regular season starts and both of his two postseason starts.

There has never been a full lunar eclipse in the middle of a World Series game until tonight.

There's never before been a lunar eclipse during the WS, so no.
