Depending on your politics, a clogged sewer line in Downtown Albuquerque Tuesday night was a blessing or a curse.
With thousands of people set to attend a John Kerry rally on Civic Plaza, city sanitation crews were working to suppress the odor caused by a blocked sewer line just a few blocks away at Lomas and Seventh streets.
The 27-inch line has been clogged for nearly two weeks, but has begun to emit stronger odors with warmer weather in recent days, said Jim Fink, an engineer with the Albuquerque public works department.
At least one New Mexico television station reported Monday night that the stench at Civic Plaza was practically unbearable and could jeopardize the Kerry rally. But Fink said a temporary solution, which involved injecting water and chlorine into the pipes, helped get the stench under control Tuesday.
By Tuesday evening, shortly before the Kerry rally, the odor was all but undetectable to the noses of Journal reporters.
Fink said city workers have been using high-pressure water jets to pump water into the pipe with hopes of dissolving the blockage. But the line began to completely collapse a few days ago, so Fink and his crew decided to go to Plan B replacing the pipe. But he said the city decided to wait on the estimated $800,000 job until after the Kerry rally.
"We didn't want to disrupt all the traffic," Fink said.
Meanwhile, a Kerry campaign aide wasted no time spinning the incident to her candidate's advantage. Asked if she was worried about a foul odor disrupting the rally, a spokeswoman said it wouldn't be an issue.
"The stink will be no more of an issue than George Bush's stinking policies over the past four years," said Laura Capps of the Kerry campaign.
But Fink said he heard Republicans offering their own analysis of the sewer episode.
"I had a Bush supporter tell me we were trying to stink up the Plaza before Kerry did," said Fink, who claimed no allegiance to either candidate.
Kerry/Edwards and the democrats emit a spiritual and ethical stench far worse than any clogged sewer line.

What the hell's that smell?
You'd think they'd want to keep the stench in order to mask Kerry's.
What a waste of time and effort. Kerry will just stink up the place all over again.
We may have located the secret opening to DU. Albuquerque, who knew?? Seal up the hole, hang a garlic braid on it, and let the weeds take over. There is no life there.
Possibly in addition to kerry's foul smell, it was those newly registered demo voters from the local cemetaries. Bush/cheney 2004
It's official. Kerry/Edwards offend all the senses.
I think it was caused by an old pair of Michael Moore's underwear lying in a corner.
